Rich_Eason Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Oh joy of joys... :P I've got my third puncture in three months only this time it is the second puncture on a tyre previously repaired. In all occasions its been a screw. Only difference this time the screw is currently residing fairly close to the outside edge of the tyre, but still within the tred. Whats the deal with getting tyres repaired, is there a maximum number of repairs per tyre or how close it can be repaired to the tyre wall? I just fear new tyre might be required and there is only 5k on them. Does anyone know where I can buy solid tyres from as I am begining to get a little "peshed off" with having to go get them repaired.... :P Quote
ham's c4vts Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 i would of thought if its on the edge or near then itll be a new one :P dont know how many punctures you can have repaired on a tyre :P Quote
Rich_Eason Posted January 8, 2007 Author Posted January 8, 2007 Well my fears were right, because it was near the edge it does indeed need a new tyre. Amazed at the price difference between three tyre companies within a few mile radius. Best price £143.75 and those men in the bright blue jumpsuits who are the "boys you can trust" quoted an outstanding £209 fitted...but not until Wednesday. There was lots of chin scratching and sucking through teeth as well because "its not a common size"? :P What kind of crud is that? I hate Kwik Fit always have always will but always worth a visit to gauge their view of the market prices. :P I'm wondering what you get for the extra £50 apart from "mug" stamped on your forehead? bill03 Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 I had a similar problem when I had a Renault (Rubbish) Laguna. Went for the cheaper option and lost 5mpg over the originals. Quote
Rich_Eason Posted January 8, 2007 Author Posted January 8, 2007 Believe it or not the above prices are for the same make and model of tyre, thats why I cant believe KF cost so much more. Quote
Z3M Roadster Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 £143 a tyre?! are they pirelli Pzeros? Quote
Rich_Eason Posted January 8, 2007 Author Posted January 8, 2007 205/50/ZR17 Michelin Exalto 2 - Its whats on there at the moment and basically were brand spanking when I got the car, coloured lines, little pips 'n all. As I said in my previous post, I have been given quotes ranging from £143 - £209 each fitted balanced. I have now sourced one at £131 with 5% works discout ;) I knew they were going to be £££ but thought £209 was taking the pis* somewhat   Quote
ham's c4vts Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Dont they advertise price match. i know they some times try to charge money to take you old tyres away!!!do you have a costco near you, as they sell michelin and do good offers sometimes Quote
Stuey Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 ooof!! The tyres are more expensive than the wheels!! mine needs 3 new wheels and tyres whilst it is at the bodyshop. Thats nearly 900 quid on wheels before they look at the bodywork!! I am going to drive like a granny if the tyres are coming in at about £140 a pop  Quote
Rich_Eason Posted January 8, 2007 Author Posted January 8, 2007 I think they do but like you say they have an excellent pricing scheme. wouldnt suprise me if they charged for the air in the tyre. I dont have any faith in Kwik Fit after watching my mates Mk 1 Metro slip off the ramp and puncture the fuel tank. Probably did it a favour however... I've used in days gone past a little local set up looks a mess but the guys in there really know there stuff, polite dont treat you like a mug and dont care about the pound signs. They just want to offer good reliable service. I popped in there today and the bloke couldnt help enough, even though he didnt have the tyre on the shelf he tried his best. The kind of place you dont mind giving the guy a tenner for a beer as i know one thing is for sure I wouldnt find standing in the rain in the freezing cold hoofing soaking wet tyre covered in sheeite for someone particulary enjoyable. Besides which whilst I was up there got to have a chat about the VTS  At 140 quid a corner yes I'm going to be feeding the steering wheel from now on, maintaining the ten to two position at all times, pull my seat as far to the sterring wheel as possible, in the most upright posistion as possible. Once in I will get the GF to put a pillow behind my back. I will then get her to put a box of tissues on the parcel shelf with the tartan rug whilst I put on my knitted driving gloves and clip on shades.... Quote
Z3M Roadster Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Ever thought about going for cheaper tyres? Michelin aren't that great anyhow. Quote
Stuey Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 I personally wouldnt want to stray to far away from a known manufacturer. I know Michelin and Pirelli are reliable. there are loads of other decent firms out there but I dont know their reputations. Quote
Rich_Eason Posted January 8, 2007 Author Posted January 8, 2007 Perhaps when they are worn out I will but at the moment it is only the one which is dudd. I could change when the front wear out I might, but prefer to have at least to matching pairs of tyres if not all four. Pointless I know but thats just the way I am about it  I'm not too fussed about the tyre performance as long as they are safe and legal. I dont cover huge miles in the car so longevity in wear terms isnt an issue 20,000 miles is 20,000miles but at the milage I do a year that would take nearly three years to cover! Obviously harder wearing tyres will last even longer and be a bouns. Going to a cheaper brand isnt really an option as I always try to keep to well known brands or at least reputable ones and if anything, false economy. Quote
ham's c4vts Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Ever thought about going for cheaper tyres? Michelin aren't that great anyhow.Ive never had problems with michelin tyres, and had them on loads of cars(maily citroens)ive had cheaper brands on after market alloys(fulda and yokohama) they never wore as well as the michelins Quote
xavtia Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 might be worth trying cabot tyres on henry st totterdown if you need any more, I got quoted over £100 for a tyre for my Xsara so asked the RAC guy and he suggested them, got one for £63 Quote
Safety Engineer Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Would never replace Michelin with Michelin given the choice, Have had them on a few cars. Driven sensibly they have all lasted very well (best was 56,000 on one pair) BUT have never been that good in the wet. I have changed them for: Continentals - Good all round tyres, use high silica mix compoundsUnriroyal - 'The rain tyre' and yes very good, owned by ContinentalBF Goodrich - Again good all rounders, owned by Michelin but they use different compounds including high silica mixesAvon - Very good all round tyres. All have given typically 5,000 less miles less wear than the Michelin but would happily sacrifice that the better overal ride and grip and all have been cheaper than the Michelins. Anyone in Essex want a good tyre fitter, Supertyres in Maldon are well worth a look. Quote
Rich_Eason Posted January 9, 2007 Author Posted January 9, 2007 might be worth trying cabot tyres on henry st totterdown if you need any more, I got quoted over £100 for a tyre for my Xsara so asked the RAC guy and he suggested them, got one for £63 I have managed to get £131 at Brittania Tyres in Fishponds plus a 5% discount through work. Where abouts in Bristol are you Xavita? I'm not overly fussed about the tyres to be honest I just want them to match at least in pairs not have odd ones dotted on each corner. I had some 10" Dunlop SP's once, they were the bees knees grippy and good performance in wet. The only problem would be I would need one hell of a tyre lever to get them to stretch onto 17" Wheels. Rich_Eason Posted January 9, 2007 Author Posted January 9, 2007 :( I havnt been to those parts since they started buggering about with the end of the M32... I'm up there in the North Part of town....in fact South Glous...! Quote
Rich_Eason Posted January 9, 2007 Author Posted January 9, 2007 Repaired for the princly sum of 131notes. Looked a complete knobend trying to blag my non exsistant works divvie. I "wasnt allowed" to drive the VTS into the tyre changing bay "welcome gramps" had to do it. I'm a smidge over 6'2" he was about 70 and about a touch over 5'. As I handed the keys over I saw him get in and was hillarious could just about see his head over the line of the windows swallowed up by the interior. Nice chap though although the car came back with the lights wipers settings going all over the place. Charged me for valves even though they kept the sensors...when questioned was told it is included in the standard balancing and valves fee...even though my valve was itemised at £3 didnt argue just made the point of being charged for something I didnt get. Also interesting on the wall an advert claimed that by paying them to fill your tyres with Nitrogen(?) it saves tyre wear by 25%...how'd that work then? So all I'm wondering now is where the next screw is waiting for me?..oooo er :( Quote
Stuey Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 isnt nitrogen explosive/highly flamable?? Quote
Rich_Eason Posted January 10, 2007 Author Posted January 10, 2007 Thats what I thought when I typed it but am sure thats what it said. I guess it expands as it gets hot with friction but surly that would increase tyre wear?!  Quote
Mat Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 isnt nitrogen explosive/highly flamable??Its inert Quote
Stuey Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 that told me then  Hydrogen is highly flamable Nitrogen is safe... Quote
Rich_Eason Posted January 10, 2007 Author Posted January 10, 2007 I never did enjoy science, especially Chemistry. Quote
