C4VTS Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 My windscreen was damaged this week by a stone. There was a massive crack sound as I joined he motorway, and said to myself what the ***oops*** was that! It was not until the next day that I saw the damage, which is 2 cracks about 4inches long on passenger side and very low down, below dashboard level which is why I could see no damage, but just inside the wiper swept area. if you feel the external glass there is no damage, but on the inside of car there is glass fragments on the dash, and you can just feel the chipped part. After having had a windscreen replaced on my last car Audi A4, I know that a lot of these fitters are a bunch of incompetant cowboys, and am reluctant to get it replaced for damage that cannot really be seen. When the car reaches MOT age, I guess it might have to be replaced, and the crack would have probably spread by that time. C4VTS Posted January 19, 2007 Author Posted January 19, 2007 RAC Autoglass are ok, I am on screen no.6 on the C4 and they have replaced them all. My present insurance company use Autoglass. Maybe if I get it done at work, which is near Birmingham, they would have more experience as would see more cars, than a small town where I live. Quote

How can a stone smashing the windscreen be a stress fracture? :) I guess it was stressed by the stone? :o Quote

Rich_Eason Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 There was a shed load of postings on here last year, unfortunatly I dont think they are archived on here? I seem to remember ot happened about two or three times to the OP. Then it happened to someone else. IIRC they were both replaced under warenty Quote
Z3M Roadster Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 5 of my screens have broken as a result of stress, Citroen wouldn't have anything to do with it. Quote
moggy Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 my windscreen cracked while i was stationary in a car park eating my dinner. had only done about 1000miles at the time. the crack was about 2" long 1/4 way up on passenger side. on my way to dealers to complain it extended itself another 6" as i took a roundabaout. dealer siad must have been a stone chip!! i was freakin stationary and there was no sign of any stone impact didnt bother argueing with them just contacted citroen directly the same day, they set up a claims number thingy and eventually got it replaced on goodwill. in top gear magazine they had a c4 on life test. that windscreen cracked due to nothing as well. Mat Posted January 21, 2007 Posted January 21, 2007 Here is the second part to my post about my cracked windscreen last year - cant find the first part. Summary: I noticed a crack in the centre of the windscreen one frosty Jan morning last year, with the heaters on full. Citroen claimed it was a stone chip, so i had to get a new windscreen through my car insurance who only approved Autoglass. The new windscreen is marked Pilkington, rather than Citroen and i dont like it at all. On sunny days, or night time with headlights all cars have a double image. If you look at the kerb it bends at the edges of the windscreen. Having said that, Autoglass were very good at fitting it. Quote
