I was mad enough to brave the snow this morning for my 40 mile commute to London. Managed to avoid numerous accidents and had a bit of a play in the empty office carpark.

Good to see the world hasnt stopped in your neck of the woods. :D

I waited in for someone to visit this morning, 10mins before due I got a phone call as he was "snowed in". I cant think for a minute think he was "really" snowed in, and probably couldnt be arsed to clear his windscreen or get his wheels slushy.

Whilst leaving the house this morning, I would "Highly Commend" the Royal Mail van driver for taking the bend outside our house on fresh snow this morning at some speed but unfortunatly maintained a straight line into the kurb. The sight of fear on the drivers face would have made a better picture than a snowy scene on a snowy day.

Excellent foresight demonstrated that in snow, traction can be "a bit limited".

By the time I'd got in to work it going, but the world was still at a standstill.

P.S - Does your snow "pitch", "settle" or "stick"?

I shouldn't have bothered coming in, only 2 other people did in my office.

On route I saw a ford puma wrapped around a speed camera, a woman go into the back of an articulated lorry and the car infront of me plough through someones front wall, as they overbraked for a junction...amateurs

Anyhow, time to leave the office for another fun drive. Who needs traction control...thankfully not me as mine didn't come with it

It snowed for all of 5 minutes earlier and thats about it. Nothing stayed though just meted straight away.

My C4 got stuck trying to get the up the hill where I live, so had to leave it at the bottom of the hill tonight. I guess it's due to the weight of the diesel and the wide tyres as an N-reg Honda Civic got up the hill with no problems.

Had loads of snow done here in sussex! Fun drive into school this morning, especially considering that it is an all-counrty road drive :D Very boring...and slow, but safe, and that is all that matters... ;)

Got some strange looks of the neighbours when I came out with a broom and swept the snow of my car this morning. :D

Just got back from the local car park, no snow but plenty of ice so have had an entertaining hour throwing the car around with the ESP on and off to feel the difference. Quite impressed.

I ventured into work yesterday...one of only a few who bothered in my place - but then again I only live 6 miles away ;)

Was a good laugh - I enjoyed every standing start :P

Trouble started when I got into work...we had a major conference in a nearby hotel...and our receptionist was ill - so I covered - cue 300 telephone calls in one hour all asking the same bloody question "is your conference still on?"

YES !!!! IT IS !!!

Grrr.... :D

very true safety engineer...

Well the snow has been completely none existant in Nottingham/Derby even though the weather forcasters where saying we were going to get some of the worst of it...I am dissapointed that we have no snow but I think that is mostly due to the weather people who where saying that the apocalypse was coming in the form of the white stuff... :D

In 1988 I had a Citroen BX which as you will know had the hydropneumatic suspension. After some heavy snow our car park at work was full of the white stuff and while others were struggling I jacked up the suspension and park up with no trouble at all.

However the trouble came later after work. When I got back to the car some 8 hours later you know what happens to the BX after that length of time the suspension settles and the car sinks as if the suspension has collapsed which I suspose it does through lack of pressure. Unfortunately the snow had not gone just frozen and my car had settled into the snow which was now several inches up the door and frozen solid. Tried kicking it away but the door was well stuck so I had to crawl in through the tailgate start the engine and jack up the suspension to clear the snow. Luckily when I got home the doors had thawed out so I could exit the car in a more civilised manner.

Took me some time to live that one down at work.

Snow was a nightmare this evening, from Birmingham to Warwick spent most of the journey in 2nd and 3rd gear due to all the snow and ice on the roads. Even 5mph was too fast in places.

Just glad I got home safe.

still snowin,,its now 6.30 and 4" deep just rescued my sis and bab from the 4x4 cos shes a girl and shat her pants ........ drove sis home and took 4x4 took 2 hours to do 2miles then found a side road to have a good go. amazing those things they do 40 in 4" of snow no probs without vering off into kerbs and trees .......till u hit brakes ,bit rubbish without abs

You can do 40mph in 4" snow in a C4 so long as you don't mind only going in a straight line. People don't seem to realise that 4x4s may well grip better but they also take a lot more to stop them as they weigh so much.

ABS is a waste of time in the snow.

Another angle...

ABS is a waste of time in the snow.

Agreed!

Even at 5 mph the brakes had no effect on ice yesterday at first bend in office car park.

The C4 was heading for a lampost at 5mph and it was just luck I missed it by about 12 inches and carried on up the curb and onto a verge. Just steering and not braking at all had little effect either.

No damage done but it does make you aware of the possible danger, even at very low speeds.

I actually took the bull by the horns and did my 6 mile commute through west London on my push bike. Seems like city folk haven't a clue when it comes to anything more than rain. I was appalled by the number of drivers who'd just used their wipers to clear portholes in the snow, and made no attempt whatsoever to clear any other windows at all.

I suppose that gives them immunity from prosecution for using a hand-held cellphone if no-one can see in!

The ride wasn't too bad (given what I said about unsighted drivers) as the snow was only soft near the kerb where no cars had been. God knows what it would have been like if it had packed down. Didn't lose it or get that sideways feeling once. Maybe this is one time when slimline high pressure tyres cut through to the road surface better than a wide set of 4 boots. I wonder if the C4 would have been as sure footed.

The only downside was that my wedding tackle was doing an impression of a nipple and two hazelnuts by the time I got there and changed!

The moral of your story Welshguy is that no good deed goes unpunished...

Apparently so...They closed my workplace at 1pm on Friday and told us to go home...I live 6 miles away and it took 1hr 30minutes to get home! I then spent 15 minutes clearing the driveway so I could get up it...and when I finally parked up I realised I had a screw in my back tyre... :D
