Guest Chippy Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 Hi PeoplePicked up the C4 VTR+ EGS just before Christmas. Went to buy a C5 but bought the C4. Delighted with the car. No regrets but getting used to a smaller car took a while as I have always owned bigger cars. This one came with the full glass roof. Makes the inside look much bigger. Looking forward to sunny drives to the south of France this year. I have read about the fuel figures and what people are getting so I thought I would share mine.First thing to mention is no to put too much faith in the computer. I am getting regular readings in the mid 50's to the gallon, and on a recent trip to Kent from the west country it told me 61.7 mpg. Very good. On that particular tank full the reality was 52 mpg. There is only one way to confirm any true mpg and that is fill to the neck, do the miles, and refill to the neck. Do the maths in my case with a calculator and there you go. At one point The low fuel level light came on and I drove on for a while longer. It was telling me I had 87 miles left in the tank. It also said that I was doing 52 mpg. I filled up putting in 57 litres. If, as we are told, the tank holds 60 litres then there was 3 litres left in the tank. So it was actually telling me I could do another 87 miles on 3 litres. I don't think so.The TomTom I use also shows the speedometer to be 2 mph out.Just making the point that we should enjoy the toys but apply some common sense about accuracy.Sounds like I am griping.....Not at all.Lovely car, good design, Wonderful gearbox, Low 50's mpg( for an automatic), £50 road tax, I am more than pleased.Go and buy one. Thanks for reading. Rich_Eason Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 The TomTom I use also shows the speedometer to be 2 mph out. Welcome to the forum Chipy! :P Its 2mph out but then the vehicle spedo can be 10% over read 0% under read IIRC....so thats not bad. Also someone in work had a MAJOR beef about how inacurate his Sat Nav was as at calculating speed as he wanted to use it as his cars speedo :D I wouldnt get too worried about it enjoy your new motor! wozza Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 And when you fill up remember your filling the pipe somewhat as well so can get a bit extra in there. Meaning calculations will be slightly off. Quote
ham's c4vts Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 Welcome Chippy, ive found the computer to be around 0.5 to 0.7 mpg out to actually brim to brim calculations over a few weeks so its near enough for a good guide for me, and ive found speedo spot on to my tom tom, same as Wozza.Just enjoy your new toy :D Quote
C4VTS Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 The TomTom I use also shows the speedometer to be 2 mph out. Both my speedo and mpg computer are 100% accurate according to TomTom :D Quote
wozza Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 I know my speedo is accurate but my computer im gonna guess is pretty much right as well i did a calculation which was very close to right. Currently showing me getting 26.4mpg but done lots of rush hour driving through centre recently so not got out of 2nd gear. Forgot to say welcome earlier as well so welcome to the board mate. Quote
citroeneddie Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 Welcome Chippy. I'm also looking to order a C4 VTR+ EGS later on in the year to replace my C5 estate. I don't really use all the room in the estate, so looking forward to a smaller car, automatic, with low emissions. Please keep us informed how you get on throughout the year. Eddie Quote
hertsnminds Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 My speedo matched my old Garmin eMap and now my Garmin Nuvi very closely. I would always doubt the GPS before the speedo as it relies on calculations based on more than 1 signal. You should notice the MPG get better with age, my 1.6 Hdi (110) seems to have a step change about every 10k. Have to say it feels much better with close to 21k on the clock than it did when it was brand new. IanBlack 55 VTR+ Quote
bill03 Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 According to the Nav techies the GPS speed is far more accurate than your speedo. Only downside it doesn't react quickly to changes in speed and direction so a longish straight with constant speed will give an accurate reading.. :D Quote
C4VTS Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 I would always doubt the GPS before the speedo as it relies on calculations based on more than 1 signal. Which is why GPS is more accurate than most speedos. Also I have checked my GPS against one of those radar devices that flashes on a big sign your actual speed and the GPS was spot on. Quote
hertsnminds Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 I don't doubt that with a full satellite lock the GPS is more accurate. That is 1 thing I like about the eMap it shows you where it is getting its signals from, how strong they are and how acurate it's tracking is at any time. That still didn't stop it displaying 0MPH or freezing at a previous reading for a few seconds while it locked on to a different satellite, could show 30MPH when you were doing 40MPH. Built up areas, cloudy days and other atmospheric conditions can also affect accuracy IanBlack 55 VTR+ Quote
