Hi,

I've just recently bought a 2002 Berlingo HDI 2.0 van, its my first vehicle since passing my test 2 months or so ago, I'm growing quite attached to it already, super practical & great for carting my outdoor kit to far flung places. Its been running faultlessly since buying it, however last night something weird happened. I had to temporarily park on the road beside parked cars whilst helping an elderly relative out the van, the hazards were switched on & I took the key out of the ignition. On returning 30 seconds later I couldn't get the ignition to start the van at all. I tried a few times, changing my technique, lights on, lights off, clutch down, but it was having none of it. I had to resort to pushing it down the street to a safe parking place. I left it for 10 minutes, when I returned it started first time, no probs.

Does anyone have any idea why this may have happened? The van has had no problems starting on any other occasion, which makes me wonder whether its a built-in safety feature which I accidentally activated, or some kind of electrical issue. You all seem like knowledgeable Berlingo users, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

When it failed to start, did it crank over (at normal speed) and not fire ?, crank slowly - or nothing happened at all.

When you tried to start it, did the battery warning light do nothing, go dim, or go out completely.

Hi Terry,

It cranked over at a normal speed, but failed to fire. It didn't even get close to firing, just a constant cranking sound. I must have tried to start it around 5 times, all with the same result.

I didn't look at the battery light at the time, do you think it could be a flat battery? I'm pretty sure the battery light doesn't come on during normal driving, will double check this though.

If it makes any difference, the engine must have been cold, as I had driven just half a mile prior to this happening.

Hi,

Could possibly be an immobiliser problem?... as this is controlled by the ignition key.If the immobiliser is set it lets you turn the engine, but it wont start!

Cheerz,

Yes, I thought that as well, but I'm sure the immobiliser feature must have been disabled in my van. The reason being that it was kitted out with replacement armour plated locks, so the original ignition key must have been replaced.

get someone to bang on the bottom of the tank while you crank it over. low pressure pumps are common fault.

I'll remember this in case it happens again.

Cheers.
