I have a C3 XTR with roof rails. They adapt so that you can convert them to east/west roof bars. What I need to know is, can I fit a roof box onto the east/west rails. I am worried that the 4 screws that hold the rails in place will shear of at speed and send the roof box flying away.

I was going to buy roof bars that fit across the south/north bars fitted on the car already but if the rails that came with the car would hold up then I would save money that i could put to a bigger better roof box.

cheers crapday.

I would have thought that the reason for the bars to sit north/south is when when they are not in use-i.e to reduce drag and maintain normal fuel economy. The operational postion must be east/west, as you would have to have a very wide roof box to straddle north/south rails?

It seems most unlikely that you would experience bolt failure, provided the roof load weight limit is not exceeded. The old style roof racks were only clamped to the window gutters-there were no positive bolt fixings then, and even these stayed on ok....
