I have a 2007 C4 and are planning to replace the factory fit radio with a Kenwood head unit. The problem is that the controls to opporate the cars menu are built into the radio. I could of course change radio everytime I need to change a menu setting but was wondering if anyone had updated their steering wheel controls to include the menu buttons that come as standard on some models such as the C4 VTS. If they have done this upgrade is it a complex and expensive task? Thanks in advance for and help and advice.

Yes you can replace Citroën's Blaupunkt RD4 with a unit of your own choice.

First make sure that new head unit does have the facility for remote control - most do these days.

To retain use of the steering wheel controls (and sound for the parking sensors, speed sensitive volume control, etc) you will need a CAN Bus adpator specific to the C4 and your chosen radio. Connects2 is good place to check for what you need.

You will also need an aerial adaptor as the RD4 uses a Fakra connector.

When you new head unit is fitted, when you press the "Menu" button, the audio icon will either be absent or greyed out. The display for the radio will now of course be on the new head unit. The Trip computer and other icons will be as they were.

Note that the C4 is not DAB ready, and fitting the necessary second DAB aerial is no easy task.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply. I have had no problem fitting a after market head unit and getting the sterring controls to work my question relates more to the menu options in the car that are controlled via the factory fit radio. However I believe that some C4 have the menu controls on the steering wheel and I was wondering if anyone had tried putting these in after having removed the origianl factory fit radio

My C4 (VTR+) effectively already has the controls on the RD4 duplicated on the steering wheel boss, so replacing the radio made no real difference.

I've heard about owners of SXs &c. having to refit the original radio so as the adjust the clock, for summer time, for example.

I don't know if the additional controls can be fitted later, but all things are possible. I know it will be more than matter of just adding and connecting the switches and wheels, assuming you can get them; it will all need to be enabled via the Citroën dealer's secret software.
