Guest jamie white Posted June 25, 2007 Posted June 25, 2007 hi, i recently had the annoying plastic clip that fixes the clutch cable to the pedal, snap while out shopping.i had no rac card with me,so managed to get home by putting the car in gear then starting it,then as carefully as possible changing gear by revving up etc,and hoping i didn`t have to stop for traffic lights etc!!i managed it without too many problems, apart from teasing the gaerstick into first when engine running and car rolling downhill.this did produce a slight grinding.i then got home and purchased the plastic clip.i have now fitted this and adjusted the cable approximately as it was before, without checking the clutch pedal travel measurements as stated in the haynes manual.my problem is that i can easily engage all ears when stationary with enging running, but when changing from 1st to 2nd,or 2nd to 3rd,when the car is moving,i can often get a crunching noise.3rd to 4th is fine,as is 4th to 5th and reverse.could the cable and pedal adjustment be that important, and is causing this,or have i perhaps done some damage to the gearbox getting home without a clutch?the clutch does seem to release with the pedal at a higher point than before i changed the clip.slow gear chages can eliminate the problem completely. many thanksjamie Quote
DaveK Posted August 4, 2007 Posted August 4, 2007 Which model? High miles? Was the clutch release getting heavier for a while before it finally bust the clip? Well worn clutch linings and release bearing lead to this symptom. Prior to 1999 (possibly earlier) the clutch cable was adjustable. Then they put self adjusting ratchet device on it which I don't much like. If it's adjustable you measure from the base of the steering wheel to the pedal, press the pedal down and measure the distance- 150mms according to the book. So long as there's a bit of free play at the pedal it should be ok. Quote
