I have just collected a secondhand C4 1.6 VTR+ and found out that it doesn't come with a factory-fitted alarm.

My question is - do I retro fit a Citroen one because of all the electronics in this car - or do I buy a 3rd party one with all the issues this may throw at me.

If you think the latter, then which make/model do you recommend?

Thanks

Just as an aside, how useful to do people think car alarms are.

How often when you leave your car are you within earshot of the alarm?

When you hear any car alarm go off have you ever called the police?

How many false alarms have you had from car alarms?

How many times has a car alarm actually prevented your car from being stolen?

Once the alarm has gone off the thief is already inside the car, how much time do they need after that to remove anything they want?

Maybe car alarms do provide a deterrent but I think they are more trouble than they are worth. Better off with decent locks, window glass and immobiliser systems (IMHO).

Alarm is not really much use these days.

Thieves normally steal the car keys from your house because immobilisers are fitted to cars since at least 1996.

I presume all C4's have the immobiliser fitted as standard?

No-one takes any notice of an alarm, and if it goes off while a tea-leaf is doing a bit of TWOCing, he just acts as if it is his car. It might alert you if it's happening on your front drive.

The C4 immobiliser meets the necesasry Thatcham(?) standard and has deadlocks. It's highly rated in the industry.

If you want serious advice as to which alarm is best to fit, ask your insurers.

My peronal view, from the choices you give, would be Citroën's own.

The only one i would consider buying are the car alarms which page you to tell you someone is near your car / getting inside it. That would them tell me I need to get something hard and bat shaped.
