Air Conditioning Recycle Problem

Hello,

When stuck behind a smelly lorry or tractor, I would press the recycle button on the air con. I would hear a click as the car switched air sources and the fan noise would go much louder.

Recently I was stuck behing some smelly traffic and the recycle button did not help. I then noticed there was no click and no change in fan noise. The dealer (it's under warranty just) said the motor needed replacing.

It took four days to get the part, which I thought was slow, but now that it has been replaced I still cannot hear a click nor an increase in fan noise when I press the button. I haven't been trapped in smelly traffic so I cannot say for sure, but I don't think the recycle button is working.

Is there a way to test this? Can you hear the click and fan noise on your cars? What might have gone wrong?

Thanks.

Is Your Air Con manual or Automatic Digital Air Conditioning?

Put it on "recirculate" (ie with the light on), close all the windows and turn the a/c off. After a couple of miles, if the windows start fogging up, the air is being recirculated.

Personally I'd get it back to the dealer to sort - even if the car's warranty has expired any parts they've fitted will come with a 12 month guarantee and the fault was reported / diagnosed before the warranty expired.

When my C3 stepper motor packed up it would click when going from RECIRC to FRESH. Eventually it got very lod and the dealer changed the stepper motor. Since then it has been quiet like it was before the problem. When on recirc the fan doesn't speed up on mine only if I select DEMIST when it runs at full speed and is defected onto the screen.

Hello,

I am the original poster. Sorry for the delay, first I went on holiday, then I had computer problems, but now I am back. I cannot get the forums to log me in so I have had to re-register.

Dealer one said they had replaced the motor and there was nothing more they could do. I had some other (turbo) problems that they could not resolve so I went to another franchise. they fixed both the a/c and the turbo. They fitted another stepper motor.

To clarify the fan speed soes not increase when I select recirc, it just gets louder, I presume as a consequence of the valve bing shut it changes the acoustics of the pipework.

The reason the noise increases is that in recirc the flap opens into the interior of the car in the footwell not being fed from outside, so you can here the passage of the air into the fan.

As I said it's the stepper motor that is the problem in these cases

So it gets louder because you hear the air going in as well as out? I see.

yes, you were quite right: they changed the stepper motor.
