hi,

i have a 55 reg hdi berlingo van, which makes an odd whistle type noise at around 2000rpm and again at about 2800rpm. most noticeably this happens when I take my foot off the accelerator, when changing gear, for example, around town. a constant whistle is also noticed when driving around 70mph on motorways etc at 2800rpm, but if i accelerate (revs higher) or decelerate (lower the revs) slightly the noise disappears completely.

i enquired at my local dealership, when i visited for my 1000 mile check-up, to be told that it was a known problem with the 'exhaust' resonating, and that they had already reported it to citroen, as other berlingo hdi customers had also mentioned it. the mechanic chap used 'blowing though a milk bottle', as an analogy. since then, ive been back for my 1st year service, and this time told that it probably wasn't the exhaust at all, and that the dealership were awaiting a fix update from citroen.

i have a friend with a 54 berlingo hdi van that sometimes makes the sound at around 2000rpm and 2800rpm, although to a lesser extent.

just wondered if anybody else has, or has had, the same problem, and if any light could be shed? any suggestions really appreciated, as my radio's working overtime :0)

btw - i have a 55 reg berlingo hdi van with just 16000 miles, and the whistle noise has been apparent from day one.

all the best,

john.

ive got a xantia hdi 90bhp which has done the same since i had it, now done 118,000 miles and still does it but runs fine! i think its just a characteristic of the hdi engine, probably just the turbo whistling.

hi rowls,

thanks for your reply.

i guess it is the turbo making the whistle noise at certain revs, as you say. i was hoping it might disappear after some miles, but hasn't, and doesn't look like its going to from what you say.

the engine runs fine with smooth acceleration, and a bit of poke too, as your does, i just wish the damned whistle (at certain revs) would stop.

i wonder if this characteristic only applies to the 90bhp hdi version, and not the higher bhp engine with the intercooler?

has anybody else experienced this? if so, did you, or your dealership, find a fix?

thanks in advance, and all the best,

john.
