i recently bought a w reg hdi and while driving over speed bumps or bad road surfaces i found the car seemed to drive as if it had no suspension at all. me and all in the rear seats felt every bump go straight to our backs(spines) i have no idea what the problem could be. if anybody can help enlighten me please do. i did own a xantia 1.9 diesel L reg and the ride in that car was brilliant.

Hi Terry,

A few things that you have to check first m8 are:-

1.When you adjust the ride hieght lever (centre console). Does the car move up and down correctly?

2.With the lever in the high position (engine running), check the lhm fluid level (orange float).

3.With the engine running, how often do you hear the "ticking sound" from the hydraulic pump?

4.Engine running still, press down on all four corners of the car to check that the suspension has travel up and down in one movement. If one or two corners are hard to bounce it could be the spheres are on there last legs or need recharging.

5. Is this harsh ride all the time or just now and then?

It will give us a better idea of what is the problem and how to advise you better ok m8. :)

thanks for helping. i did as you said and pushed down on all four corners and i found the rear of the car was very rigid compared to the front. i also checked the height adjuster and that works fine

Well if thats the case Terry, it sounds as though the two rear outer spheres need re-charging or replacing.

Most good mechanics can do this without too much trouble or cost (spheres £22-ish) and labour allow 1 hr per side :)

It also might be worth while to drain and replace the LHM fluid if your not to sure when it was last done.... Your Xantia will run sweet and smooth again.

If it still isn't any better, then I would look at the rear centre sphere (in front the spare wheel carrier) but for the cost and peace of mind get all 3 replaced m8
