Is it definitely the ABS playing up, or a slow oscillating effect that only appears at certain pedal pressure ?

I'd find a quiet road and force the ABS to kick in to compare.

If it's the latter, then it sounds like your brake valve (dosseur) needs replacement.

unclefista, sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you but at last I think the fault is with the brake valve, when going very slow and touching the pedal very lightly I can feel something through my foot, so if this is the problem where do I go next, please dont say a Citroen Garage. I hope you can help.

Hello there. I had a similar problem with my '98 110 Hdi. ABS kicked in for no reason and made the car dodgy to drive to say the least. Phoned the Dealer and asked if I could disable it by removing the fuse. They said yes, the brakes would then be non ABS but the car would not pass an MOT until properly repaired. I took the car to the them and they read the fault code which confirmed a faulty (Drivers front wheel) sensor. They did not charge me for the diagnostic check as it only took a moment. I bought the sensor from them and fitted it, bit fiddly, best to take of engine undertray for better access to plug position. Once fitted all restored to good health and no problems since, about 3 years / 30,000 miles. Not all Citroen dealers will rip you off. Mine are VERY helpful and charges are reasonable. Cheers, hope this helps.

Hi Allan, my Xantia is the same, I was gonna change the valve myself, but TBH I can't be arsed ;)

When I get round to it, I'll have a go myself, but at the moment, I seem to be subconciously driving around it :)

It's not a difficult job, I'd imagine an hour or so at a Citroen Specialist, part is £95 from GSF.

Good luck

Yes and no. Yes in as much as you can't get new rings to put on so have to buy the entire shaft. No, if the rings are still there but are hanging loose. A freind of mine had the same problem. The rings rust at the back and the build-up breaks the rings off. His rings were still there so he cleaned them and the shafts up as well as he could and glued the rings back on with an epoxy metal product (JB Weld or such) he secured them in place with large hose (Jubillee) clips until the metal had gone off. He told me that he also built the epoxy up round the sides of the rings before clamping them so that the rings were held on three sides so to speak. He's still got the car and as far as I know he still hasn't had to change the shafts. Worth a try I think! Might just save yourself a couple of hundred sponduliks! Cheers.

Further to this post. Spoke to the guy tonight and he tells me that it's about two years since he did the first one, the second one about 6 months ago. Both are still fine. He mentioned that an ex citroen mechanic we both know used to salvage the reluctor rings from duff driveshafts so that he had a few "spare" to put back on to other shafts. His prefferred method was silver soldering. Both methods seem to work fine. My mate says he used "Chemical Metal". It is important when making the repair that the inside surface of the ring and the mating surface of the shaft are both clean and free of debris. It is important to clamp the ring so that the gap between "peaks" at the "Break" is as near to the same as the rest as is possible. The reason for this is so that the frequency generated by the ring is constant. You probably know that the ABS system works by monitoring the frequencies from each wheel sensor and activating the system if there is a difference in any of the readings. Hence the "early" activation we have both experienced. Obviously a broken ring would throw the system into confusion. If it happens again, removing the relevant fuse will disable the ABS an the car will be drivable with "normal" brakes. Cheers. Hope this helps.

wonder if this the problem with mine but didn'tnotice the rings being loose.

which fuse is it to make the brakes work with out abs as mine locks up so maybe my problems are the fuse is missing? causing abs light to be on and not working
