My Citroen ZX cooling fan doesn't work.

The temperature is normally fine without it but when stopped in traffic the engine temperature rapidly comes up and we have to use the cabin heaters to cool the engine instead.

Have narrowed this down to a non-operating cooling fan/circuit. Unfortunately have tried everything in the Haynes manual to identify the fault and I can't work it out.

The fan works when connected directly to the battery.

Battery voltage is getting to the automatic switch (located at the radiator).

Bridging the switch connections doesn't make the fan ccome on, indicating that the switch is ok.

Earth connection has been re-made twice so the circuit should be good.

I have no clue what else to try, please help!!

The only way to be sure that the Fan Temperature switch is working is to run the engine until it is hot, and, with a meter or a test lamp connected from the battery via the switch to earth check that the switch is actually making when the temperature is up. Alternatively, remove the switch and place it in a pan of water (Do not completely immerse it) and with the water brought to boiling point the switch should make. If the switch is not working, replace it. Job done! If you need to replace the switch be sure to bleed the cooling system afterwards .

My sons ZX 1.4 had a similar problem which I traced to a faulty connection in the wires going to the temperature switch. When you took the plug off and bridged it out the fan ran so I suspected the switch. I checked it out and found it to be OK (Much consternation!) Turned out the wires were broken inside the plug and made the circuit OK except when it was in its normal position! I cut off the plug and put on two small "Crimps" which fitted the switch terminals and hey presto! normal service restored!

You don't say which model or engine size your car is, but as far as I know the fan circuit is quite basic, in that there are no relays etc, just the switch and the fan, and, if the power is present at the switch socket, and the fan runs when it is bridged, thereby fulfilling the function of the switch then it must either be the switch, or a dodgy connection as in my case.

Hope this helps. Cheers

Im sure it would! but you don't say where you're going to put it, or how you'll integrate it into the system. Best just to fix up what Citroen saw fit to supply as standard. I think it's probably easier!
