Guest Colin Hunter Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 Hello again folks! After a series of minor disasters with my beloved Xantia, I'm afraid to say she's departed to pastures fresh. However the hunt for improved fuel economy continues in the replacement, an '02 2.0HDi Picasso SX. I got her in early March when it was still quite cold and my first tankfull worked out at 42.8 with the trip computer indicating an average of 42.2. I have done two things since then. Started using Mergi againFitted a "Performance chip". ( £100 from ebay) Boosts power from 90 to 115 and torque from 151 to 193 lb/ftSo! It's difficult to tell which is doing the most good but my trip computer is now sitting at an average of 47.9 (Haven't done a fill/fill workout yet since fitting the chip) and the car is MUCH improved over standard. More lively in accelleration and way way better on hills where she used to struggle to hold 60 in 5th with 4up. Sails up them now with power to spare. Insurance wasn't a problem as it's only costing an extra £15 a year or much the same as the newer 1.6 110 HDi would cost. Fuel is now £1.35 a litre for Diesel here so squeezing every last mile out of the tank is imperative! Vive la revolution! Bye Bye Gordon! Quote
Guest Colin Hunter Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 Hi once more! I'm a wee bit disappointed. Just filled up again and, although the trip computer was indicating an average of 49.6 MPG the return was actually 44.5. The obvious conclusion is that the tuning chip is causing the computer to tell porkies but the milage has worked out better than the last fill, even though I've had the aircon on (Yes! It CAN Get warm enough in Shetland!) for some of the time. Perhaps the fact that I've also been revelling my new found OOMPH may have a bearing on the relatively poor showing. BTW. Fuel now £1.39.9 at the last fill! :( Over £65 for 48 litres! Cheers. Vive la revolution! Bye Bye Gordon! Quote
Guest Colin Hunter Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 Whoopee! Finally broken 50! Last fill (Yesterday) was 303.5 miles and 27.3 Litres (at £1.40.9 a litre!). The trip(e) computer was indicating 53.5 so the error seems to be constant. Don't know if that's down to the "Tuning box" or are they all like that. During this time the car has been driven briskly, but with due regard to speed limits for the most part. The aircon has also been in use some of the time. The car seems to get livelier as time goes on. Makes me think the last owner didn't drive it hard enough to clear out the crap. Cheers. Quote
Guest Colin Hunter Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 Since last filling up the car, the fuel cooler (Under the drivers side) sprang a leak. I'm not sure how much fuel was lost but the fuel computer was reading 53.3 before the fill. The actual fill up figures were 44.2 so, going by the last figures, with the trip computer reading 53.5 I would imagine she actually did around 50 again and about 8 litres was lost. The leak is now fixed and I'm waiting for a new cooler to be fitted, I have reset everything to Zero again so we'll wait and see how she goes. Diesel now £1.45.9 here! At least Dick Turpin had the decency to wear a mask! Hope you're all finding this interesting. Cheers. Quote
Guest Colin Hunter Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 Quick update. Since fitting the new fuel cooler and filling up I have not had the opportunity to check the consumption properly but the trip computer is still sitting at 54.3mpg. During this time we've had a very nice warm & sunny spell here in Shetland so the aircon has been doing it's stuff and I expect a slightly lesser return. As an aside, my neighbour has recently sold his 2.5 petrol Jeep Cherokee. The people who bought it have started using Mergi and report a 5 mpg gain! Will keep posting here. Cheers. Quote
TurboSlag Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 Hi Folks. With the recent rise in Fuel prices, £1.18 a litre here in Shetland! (and more to come we hear!) it is more important than ever to squeeze as many mpgs as we can out of a tankfull. I was recently made aware of a product called Mergi and was persuaded to try it out. It's not cheap. A 500 ml bottle is about £25. However the benefits are many. Before I started using it in my 110 Hdi Xantia I was averaging about 43 to 45 mpg in general running here in Shetland. Since using it my average has risen to 47 with some fills being above 50. When I had the car on the Mainland in September my best was 53.5. Previously I had never been above 50, 49.7 being the best.I used to manage in excess of 50mpg virtually every fillup on my HDi, so i can't see what the fuss is about. Quote
Guest Colin Hunter Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 Was yours a 90 or a 110? The 90 is better on fuel. I daresay yours was being used on longer runs than mine and you have to remember that low ambeint temperatures also have an adverse effect on consumption. It's likely a fair bit warmer where you live! The "Fuss" is not about the actual mileage acheived, but the improvement in performance and economy which has been acheived with the additive in the system. Every time I have had my car on the mainland it has been heavily loaded as we have been on Holiday and you wouldn't have got a fag paper in the boot! Just think what YOU might have managed with your driving style! Cheers. :D Quote
TurboSlag Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 A 90, remapped, EGR blanked off, with an Allard intercooler. Most of my mileage is country B road and Urban. Quote
