Hi, I am a new member and I am hoping some one can help me regarding a smelly 1997 Xsara1.8i auto that my wife drives. the problem is as follows drive the car for a while then you come to a standstill at for example t/lights and whilst it's ticking over you get a strong smell of petrol, a few minutes after you pull away the smell goes away until the next time you stop. I can find no leaks. Local garage can find nothing wrong. So can someone help as the wife is getting suspicious and thinks I am trying to get rid of her.

Regards

Ian1 :D

Have another mechanic check thoroughly the fuel line, there must be a leak somewhere. It is dangerous if you smell petrol as petrol fumes can easily catch fire even a small spark. Suggest to start from the petrol tank, fuel pump, filter, piping till the common rail on top of the engine. Make sure!!

Best Regards

its more than likely a hole in the top of your petrol tank if there are no leaks. vapours rise.

Is it really likely there is a hole in the top of the tank?? I thought they were plastic tanks. Could understand it if it were a steel tank.

Check the fuel filler cap, is the fuel tank pressurising?? Could it possibly be a porous fuel line and only evident when on tickover where excess fuel is recycling back to the tank.
