Guest ian 1 Posted November 28, 2007 Posted November 28, 2007 Hi, I am a new member and I am hoping some one can help me regarding a smelly 1997 Xsara1.8i auto that my wife drives. the problem is as follows drive the car for a while then you come to a standstill at for example t/lights and whilst it's ticking over you get a strong smell of petrol, a few minutes after you pull away the smell goes away until the next time you stop. I can find no leaks. Local garage can find nothing wrong. So can someone help as the wife is getting suspicious and thinks I am trying to get rid of her. RegardsIan1 :D Quote

It is dangerous if you smell petrol as petrol fumes can easily catch fire even a small spark. Suggest to start from the petrol tank, fuel pump, filter, piping till the common rail on top of the engine. Make sure!! Best RegardsRaymond Quote

Jonno Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 its more than likely a hole in the top of your petrol tank if there are no leaks. vapours rise. Is it really likely there is a hole in the top of the tank?? I thought they were plastic tanks. Could understand it if it were a steel tank. Check the fuel filler cap, is the fuel tank pressurising?? Could it possibly be a porous fuel line and only evident when on tickover where excess fuel is recycling back to the tank. Quote
raymond Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 Have a look at the fuel pump under your rear seat, some citroen have cracked problem with the fuel pump, mine too and need to be replaced immediately. rgdsray Quote
