Becciboo Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 If anyone can help me I'd seriously be tempted to kiss you a million times. I have a 99 Saxo East Coast so no scary electrics cos everything is manual, no power steering etc. My fan belt was squeaking really badly a few days ago, I went over a speed bump...errr at speed. The noise went but the battery light was constantly illuminated and now I can't hold any charge and my car is now looking a bit forlorn stuck on my father-in-laws drive. Has my fan belt broken? Or is it a new alternator? Whatever it is is it easy to fix and how much ish would it cost? Any advice would be lovely! Quote
Guest Colin Hunter Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 Sounds like the fan belt was too loose and the jolt has either caused it to come clean off or it was on the way out anyway and it's finally broken. Either way, if the battery light is constantly on, it means that the alternator is not working, or more likely not being driven at all. The engine will still run ok as the water pump is driven from the cambelt (1.1 & 1.4) so you won't have cooked the engine. Don't know about any other engines though (Is there a 1.0?) . If you replace the Alternator drive belt ("Fanbelt") and charge the battery I'm sure it will be OK. If you have access to a voltmeter check the voltage at the battery terminals with the engine running. Anything about 13.5/14 volts is good and will prove the alternator is ok. The cost shouldn't be more than the belt plus about 1/2 an hour's labour if that's what it is. It shouldn't cost more than £30-£40 anywhere reasonable. Try the local business directories to se if there are any mobile services in your area. May be cheaper. Cheers Hope this helps Quote
