Fuel Comsumption High On My Xantia 1.9 Td

AH! Well, that certainly makes a difference! I'd forgotten about the "RUSH" hour traffic. We're really lucky here in that we don't have much of that. I live about 6 miles from my work and it takes me under 10 minutes to get there!

I suppose 32 mpg in that context isn't too bad. Best thing to do would be to fill up the car, zero the trip meter and have a weekend away from stop/start traffic and see how it does then.

Cheers

For an example figure, I stuck £40 in mine (@ £1.07pl) , and got so far 375 miles with about 2mm until the reserve on the guage. I aim to get about 400 miles at least. So works out about 47mpg in winter

Mines a manual 1.9TD, driven with haste.

How many litres did you put in and what kind of road traffic do you drive in?

£40 gets me about 37 and a bit litres of fuel

So, 312 out of 60 litres your doing is about 24mpg!

Diesels can go that low on choke and when cold for the first couple of miles but not all the time!

gotta be timing or too much fuel being pumped in... hows you lambda sensor? cleaned it with Boost10k?

To the best of my knowledge the 1.9td Xud engine has neither a choke nor a Lambda sensor! They are the domain of petrol engines! "Chokes" are a thing of the past and were fitted to cars with carburettors to enrich the mixture when cold. I wouldn't think any half way modern car would have one since the advent of the "Cat" in 1992 (I think?) Certainly not a Diesel!

History lesson over! :D

I filled my 1.9 TD to the "neck" the other day.

I cover 40 motorway miles per day, 6 days a week......and a few around town too.

Once I see my amber reserve light coming on I'll report back on this thread and let you know the mileage I've covered.

Took my car to the mechanics and they say that there is no air or fuel leak (every morning I need to prime the engine using the priming pump to get it started). They say that they are 100% certain that the fuel pump needs calibrating and only a diesel specialist can do this. What does this involve and can a wrongly calibrated fuel pump cause excessive fuel consumption?

I'd go to a diesel specialist anyway, dont tell them what to do just give them your symptoms, and they can do their own investigation.

They will find what the problem is, fix it and then guarantee the work. job done.

Thanks all.

I have done 379 miles (50 miles were motorway) and put in 57.65 litres of diesel which works out to 30 mpg. I have had many petrol cars that did at the most 21 mpg (225 miles) for the same journey and one car my Audi A8 4.2 V8 did 13 mpg!! So doing 30 mpg on the Xantia is wicked.

I talked (on the phone) to a diesel specialist and he just said that there is a calibration as such. He said that the injectors maybe faulty. He said that it will cost about £55 excluding vat to have a look. I refuse to spend anymore money on the car!!!

Well the amber reserve light flickered as I was approaching home today......

I have covered 557 miles and I have shown no mercy to the horses during most of these miles.

Fantastic MPG from the 'old girl'........I reckon I could squeeze around 700 miles from a full tank if I were to drive a bit more conservitively!!!!

I got 312 miles out of 58 litres of diesel which works out to 24.2 mpg. I am near enough always stuck in traffic in london. I recently had a cambelt and fan belt with full service done on the car. Is this mileage too low?

Is there a way to reset the ecu?

I have recently purchased a 1.9 TD ZX and its drinking loads of fuel... it also ticks over at about 1300 RPM when hot (about 1000 when cold)... any ideas for me
