coopertron Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 Hi all, I have a couple of problems with my Xantia (1996 P reg 1.9TD) that I was hoping you knowledgeable guys might be able to help with if you can spare a moment. 1) Heater issues - I seem to be having a problem with the heater whereby as the engine warms up to normal operating temp, (around 80 - 90 degrees or so) the heater gets nice and toasty, really warm in fact, I can't have it blowing on my face. After about maybe 10 - 15 mins or so, the heater goes cold, and from then on, will only blow out cold air. If you put the heater setting on Red for full heat, then it does blow reasonably hot warm air out, but none of the other settings blow any warm air out. The actual speed appears to work as it is intended, ie on minimum there isn't much happening, and max it makes a racket and blows a lot of air out. Any suggestions on this? 2) Level indicator on the LHM reservoir tank - on my LHM tank, the little red disc that is meant to tell me what the level is apppears to be stuck right up at the top of the clear dome, and does not move at all, regardless of the ride height of the vehicle. Is there another way you can check or "guesstimate" the level?, also can you just bolt on a replacement level indicator from a scrappers? (and if so how much are they?) Thanks in advance for any help you can provide guys, Kind Regards, Mark Quote
Guest Colin Hunter Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 Hi Mark.First of all a question. Does your car have aircon/Climate control fitted, with the temperatute control marked in degrees and an "auto" setting on the fan to the left of the "Off" position. Also a button on the dash with a "Snowflake" on it, or just standard hot & cold "heater"? If you have a sunroof you will have a standard heater, if you don't you should have the aircon sytem. The reason I ask this is because the former relies on a temperature sensor on the dash and if this was wrong (Giving too high a reading) it would cause the temperature control flap to do exactly what you are describing. If it's a standard heater the flap is directly linked to the slider and you contol it yourself. If that's what you have then I don't know what could be causing it. Regarding the LHM level, if the disc is stuck right up then someone has overfilled the reservoir. An easy check would be to take off the filling cap (Next to the "Dome" with a bit of tubing [overflow pipe] coming off it) and have a look in. Use a clean screwdriver or something like a bit of dowel as a "Dipstick". If the level is up near the top you could syphon some out to see if the disc drops down. It's only connected to a float so it would sink if the float was knackered and do the exact opposite! Cheers. Hope this helps. Quote
coopertron Posted January 13, 2008 Author Posted January 13, 2008 Hi Colin - thank you for your prompt response - it is much appreciated!. Blower--------------------------------------------------------Yes the car does have aircon/climate control - the air con snowflake button is present, however prior to me buying the car, the air con pump was replaced, as well as the aux belts, pulleys and tensioners, and the air con system was drained and never refilled/regassed, so I have never used the air con. ( I am hoping to get this sorted in the summer). As such there is the temp control on the left, from 18 - 26 degrees i think it is, and the AUTO and off and max settings for the actual blower speed on the right hand side. Having read some of the posts on the forum, it did seem to point towards this dash temp sensor. I suppose the next questions regarding that are, how much is it to replace, and how awkward/fiddly would it be to sort? LHM Level----------------------------------------------------------------------I have taken off the top of the LHM reservoir (I assume the filling cap) once and peered inside it, and the level was not near the top if memory serves. Is it possible to dismantle it to have a better look at the float/dome assembly?. I must admit I haven't looked at this aspect in detail, as its nearly always raining here, and I don't have a garage, plus its freezing! Thanks again! - I might have some more silly questions coming up if you can cope..... Quote
DaveWalling Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 Hi Coopertron, The float assembly can be taken out very easily, it is just a case of turning it anticlockwise (I think), then it simply lifts out. I am wondering if at some point it has been overfilled and has become lodged in the upper position. If this is the case once it has been removed it may be possible to gently pull the float back down, hopefully restoring it to full working order. Quote
Guest Colin Hunter Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 Must be somewhere near me! It's PI**ING down here, blowing a gale and it's freezing! I have a garage though! Actually my Indicator is showing right to the top now I've gone and looked at it but the level in the tank is about 1/2 way when I look in the top. Can the float slide down the rod it's on and give a false reading? Glad I had a look now! Any Ideas as to where the level should actually be? Hmmmmmmmmmm! Quote
Guest Colin Hunter Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Looked again later and pulled out the dome assembly with the rod & float. The rod & float are moulded together and can't move so I guess the LHM level is OK after all! Something I never paid much heed to before so it's learn again lads! One thing I did notice is the float rod has a brass ring on it below the orange disc. Must be this that makes the contact for the STOP light to illuminate. Cheers again. Quote
coopertron Posted January 16, 2008 Author Posted January 16, 2008 Thanks for your comments guys!. Blower--------------------------------------------------------The dash temp sensor - does anyone know how much is it to replace, and how awkward/fiddly would it be to sort (ie do I have to take all the dash out  ) LHM Level----------------------------------------------------------------------Thanks for your advice on this. So far as I have checked before, regardless of the ride height of the car, the disc never moves, it remains wedged at the top. Seeing as you say you can take the assembly out (I assume without disturbing anything) I will have a butchers at this at some point, but I aint gonna do jack till it stops raining :D I just wondered really if there was a guesstimate just in case I need to top the reservoir up a bit. If I was to overfill it, will it drain out through the overspill, or will it cause major problems? Thanks again! Quote
Guest Colin Hunter Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 My indicator is up at the top too, but when I took the float assembly out, ( disconnect wires, 1/8 turn anticlock and lift up and out. ) the indicator dropped down. the level was about 1/2 way up the tank and when I put the indicator back it went back to the top again! Would seem the tank is slightly overfull, but rather a little too much than too little. There's still plenty of room to allow for expansion. As for the dash sensor I wouldn't think it will be very dear and, seeing as you'll have to get it from Citroen you could ask them how to change it at the time. If my memory serves me correctly it's next to the clock on the strip that runs accross the dash with the switches in it, it's a while since I had a MK1! I had to change the clock once and that was simple enough. I think it just came out by prising lightly with a screwdriver or similar. I don't think you'll cause major problems if you overfill the reservoir as long as it's not too much. The fluid needs room for expansion and the excess will probably overflow. Best to avoid that though. As long as it's about 1/2 a tank I reckon it's OK. Cheers. Quote
coopertron Posted January 19, 2008 Author Posted January 19, 2008 Thank you Colin & Dave, you are both top men! I have another couple of questions that I would be grateful if you could answer, but I will start a new thread for that!. Quote
