The recommendation is every couple of years get the spheres done, but are there any better guages as to when they need replacing? (the owners club mentions a seal that can break if left too long?)

I got no service history with my car, so I'm unsure if they have been done and when. the ride is great, it goes up and down swiftly as requested by the middle stick, but i dont want to hurt my car by leaving it too long

Any tips appreciated, ive been quoted a nice cheap price around £100 for all 4 to be done (could require labour on top) so its not crazy money but obviously i have a list of things i want for the car to keep it top shape (transmission fluids, synthetic oils, hydrolic fluid, fuel filters etc.) to keep on top of the service schedules and hopefully get another 5 years usage out of it...

Thanks

You'll easily know when the spheres are past their best as the ride quality will deteriorate markedly. It won't do any harm to run the car until that point in time with the present spheres. You'll soon know when the time comes! It's a relatively simple DIY job but you really need a special wrench to get them off (£15 on eBay) and the spheres are £19.50 each from GSF http://www.gsfcarparts.com/

For a guide for changing them see this topic http://www.citroen-owners-club.co.uk/citro...?showtopic=4507

The front ones will take about 10 mins to do as they are easily accessible under the bonnet. The rears are a bit more tricky as the car will be right down on it's stops when the pressure is off the system. Because of that you really need a pit or a lift.

£100 sounds reasonable for the job (£70 or so for parts plus an hour) bearing in mind that a mate of mine paid £98 plus vat for one spring for a Volvo V40 and then spent a whole day fitting it! Take your pick!

All in all, if they're OK which a good ride quality suggests, leave them alone. If it aint broke, Don't fix it!

Cheers. Happy tinkering!

Ah nice one! One less thing to worry about at the moment!

What about the backup shere, worth doing as a backup safety precaution?

I guess you mean the acumulator sphere at the front of the engine Pete? If ther is a rapid clicking sound whenthe engine is running then this sphere defenitly requires changing, if not I would ten to leave it till you get the other spheres changed.
