Guest Darko Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 Hello! This is the seccond Topic that I am posting regarding the stiff steering of my 1994 1.8i Xantia. You can visit the first hereXantia steering As described previosly my Xantia suffers from stiff steering. The Problem is not continious. When tourning the wheel there are parts wich go smoothly, an does that dont. Also the problems worsens when its colder. And i frist noticed it on the begging of Winter (perhaps it was always there, i dont know, because i bought the car 6 months ago). When I warm the car (slow-in city driving) the steering becomes less stiff. Also on warm days it is better. I was first suggested that perhaps the LHM fluid is bad and the filters are chocked. I cleaned those and changed the LHM wich wasnt very bad. So I went to a citroen service to ask how much would it cost to repair the problem. Thay sad 570 €, wich is in my opinion far too much. I decided to do it myself. On many german forums there are mentions of the problem. And some people suggest taking the universal joint out and working it with WD40 and than putting some engine fet on it. Acording to them the best fet to use is the First line Country cross Wet synthethic http://img113.imageshack.us/img113/8487/shemlm2.jpg can anyone tell me their expirience. How to take out the part? I am not quite sure is it the part betwean 5 and 6 or betwean 6 and 14. Many thanks to anyone that participates Quote
DaveWalling Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 Hi Darko,I have had a PM from Colin, and he informs me that the wheel bearings have to be pressed out, using a hydraulic press. The carrier is easy to remove then must be taken to somebody with a press. Colin has just had his done and it took 10 Tons of pressure to remove the old one!! The new ones must then be pressed back into place. Quote

I also fixed the problem with the exhaust. A ring that holds the downpipe and the middle part was missing. Regarding the wheel bearing, i just order one from Ebay for 20 €. I will pay someone to install it. Now I am thinking:is it possible to build a climatization inside my car :blink:Lol could get one cheap from a scrapper. Quote
DaveWalling Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 Hi Darko, Nice to see that you have managed to sort out your steering with just a bit of WD40, a lot less expensive than getting it replaced!! I think that you mean air conditioning?? That I am afraid is beyond my limited capabilities. I would however think that it would not be a simple job, certainly not as simple as bolting on a pump!! If only!! Any way nice to see that you have got your problems sorted.Dave. Quote
