Guest Visa10E Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 Ive got a loud knock/rattle coming from my steering column when I go over a bump in my 02 2.2 HDi Exclusive also a slight knocking when turning the wheel, anyone any idea what it is as I'm up to my eyeballs already with things that need fixing on my car and it's stressing me out beyond belief how many faults my C5 has had since I bought it. Ive tried the search function but have drawn a blank :( Quote

Guest Dan Slatford Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 God its quiet here, come on don't make me beg SOMEONE must have had/is having the same problem! Did you ever find out what this is? Mine's doing this sometimes, a little less now the wheels are correctly balanced but something about the steering column still knocks over some surfaces. The wheel is solid, doesn't budge in any direction, but it sounds / feels as if the motion is further down the column somewhere. Quote

Not fully, no I've been on the Honest John forum and a couple of C5 owners on with the same problem insist its something to do with the 'pinch clamp' on the steering rack being made out of too tough a metal and working itself loose, apparantly its a new rack required, they also said its £150 plus fitting but I doubt that very much bet its nearer £500 Quote
myglaren Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 £150 certainly sounds cheap - I'd bet it was from a scrapyard at that price.Car Parts Direct. Quote

Oh well, it's not too annoying right now, although I can see myself feeling compelled to do something about it sooner or later. The car really *is* solid, but that makes it feel like it's about to fall to pieces! Quote
Guest rowls Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 Early C5's had problems with the steering columns which needed replacing. The original parts were superceded by a new number which was modified. Quote
