My p reg xantia 1.9td has lost power, has started smoking (grey then black) has a rough tickover and a permanently showing engine management light. Can anyone suggest a solution.

When was the last time the air filter was checked/changed? Also may be a fault with airflow sensing although I can't recall my P Reg 1.9td having either an airflow sensor OR an engine management light or even a management system! Anybody know if they changed during '96/'97? All mine had was a mechanical fuel pump with a cable to the accellerator!

Go back to basics and check your filters (Air & Fuel) if they're OK then the next stop is likely to be poorly performing injectors (Not atomising properly) which may respond to a dose of injector cleaner or may have to be changed if they don't.

Cheers. Hope this helps :(

I had this problem on my W reg 2.0 Hdi xantia. i was going down a dual carraigeway when it lost all power and the management light came on. Checked it over and found out that the catalytic convertor was blocked up! Replaced that, reset the light and it sorted it.
