I am having difficuty selecting 1st and reverse gears. The main dealers tell me I need a new clutch, not covered by the warranty, and will cost over £500. (The car is only just comming up to 30,000 miles) I am suprised it needed changing so quickly.

The clutch kit only costs about £50. I am toying with the idea of changing the clutch myself. Has anyone any experience of changing the clutch in one of these cars?

By the sound of your problem, are you not sure its not just the gearstick linkages out of alignment, before you go buying a clutch.

A worn clutch means its will slip and judder on takeoff, and also not transmit so well (slippage/judder) while moving along and changing any gear. It should not just affect just a few gears as they say.

If you do need to change the clutch....

I personaly would not tackle a job like that anymore (my last attempt years ago on a Toyota, took me one weeks work, it was not worth the hastle), I would shop around for a reputable garage and get a better price (with a one year guarentee).

I agree with ColinC1, if the clutch isn't slipping or juddery it's probably OK. If you are just having problems engaging 1st and reverse, it's probably just not releasing properly. Might be worth gettin a second opinion before paying out £500.

I've read on another forum that you can do the clutch by dropping the gearbox with the engine in situ, but you'll want access to a decent workshop with ramps to have a decent chance of doing it.

Thanks for your advice.

Yes it does appear strange that there is no slipping or juddering, just difficulty in selecting reverse and stiff going into first. It is probably more likely to need adjusting on the cable, I have read on the Aygo forum that some people have experienced problems with the end of the clutch cable becoming detached.

You would have thought that any decent mechanic at the main dealers would have been able to diagnose and sort it out then and there. However without sounding too synical £500 for a new clutch not covered under warranty would be much more profitable for the main dealers than having to adjusting a nut or replacing a faulty cable.

I have found that by turning the engine off before selecting reverse stops the grinding noise that makes everyones heads turn when I try to select reverse with the engine running. Still it's not ideal for a car thats only 2 years old. I will probably get a second opinion as you say.

You with the clutch problem please read my post on my Problem C1.I know your vehicle is not on waranty but my cars clutch needed a gear cable does yours??.

Hi,

If you are lucky enough to live near the above Dearship.Birmingham Citroen tel no 01217667060.

Give them a try they have been fantastic with my troublesome Citroen C1 56 reg HDI 1.4 RHTHYM.

I bought the car from Bristol street dealer at Derby.Following numerous trips in for waranty issues relating to leaks which I have posted my comments about on previous entries. To cut a long story short problems started to occur under the bonnet.A further return to Derby and an engine down load failed to cure the "engine hesitation problem".A call to Citroen UK was made.Get a second opinion! she said.Well a few calls later and up stepped Birmingham Citroen who Citroen UK own.To date I have been issued with an open ended curtesy car from them until the examination is compleated. Now my car has compleated 14,000 from new having just had a main dealer service (Derby).Birmingham Citroen has now diagnosed it requires a new Clutch,Gear cable,Air intake cover and engine cover all orded.Keep our car untill yours is sorted.I call that service!!.C1MILLSTONE

Is a diesel c1 that much more economical then? What with derv being nearly 10% more at the pump?

Or have they not given you a c1 petrol.

Put the car in second gear, then apply the hand brake try to start off (Somewere safe!) In our little bugs the lack of torque from low revs it should stall instantly if it doesnt the clutch is buggered, thats the best test for clutch slip

My car crunchies when putting it in second gear when it is cold. It sounds like the Syncromesh has gone but it might just need adjusting as at times it doesn't slip in to gear very well. Anyone else had this?

Mine usually likes to crunch, but mainly between reverse and first (usually from 1st to reverse, sometimes refusing to get into reverse altogether).

My solution is to 'double-clutch' it in, usually works.

Its rediculous that this happens but mine also went and when it was looked at it was the mechanism of the clutch rather and the cluch its self. Even so Citroen wont listen to you. Iv been there!!
