ColinC1 Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 For the last two weeks the car has been rattling with a metalic sound in the cabin, near the back seat/boot area. I know it was not the rear seat belt locking latches, as this is a common fault on city bugs, because i had already fixed them, a number of months back. All you have to do is unbolt the seatbelt latches from the cars body, insert a rubber washer between body and the metal washer on the latch fixing, thus stopping the metal washer rattling off the car bodywork, and rebolt the latch back on. Anyway I searched the boot for this noise, nothing was loose, then I decided after a lot of searching to stick my hand under the rear seat, its a tight squeeze, and lo and behold I pulled out a loose roof antenna  It seems that when C1's arrive from the factory, the wheel trims and roof antenna are added at the dealership, and for some reason they never found this antenna, and they must has got another one for my car. Anyway, rattle sorted, so remember, if you get a rattle back there, you may have a spare antenna under your rear seat, he, he ? Quote
Martin_1973_uk Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 My car has so many rattles I wouldn't know where to start. One coming from the passenger seat sounds annoying as its tingy. The other main one is from the boot but I think that is the parcel shelf. These are great cheap to run cars but after 9 months I'm beginning to suspect the build quality and whether it will last a long time........ Anyone else out there supsecting the cheap build quality? To be fair I would still buya nother one. I drove a year old Focus diesel yesterday and even though it had had a hard life although it still had only done 13K miles, it was really rattly and noisy yet it is twice the price!!!!!! Quote
ColinC1 Posted April 2, 2008 Author Posted April 2, 2008 Mine is actually very rattle free and this is a year and a half later. Only rattles I have had, is the one mentioned above, (spare roof antenna found) Rear seatbelts latches where bolted to the body, (solution mentioned above) Rear window rattle from hinges, just needed WD40. That been it, fortunately, and all solvable by a bit of DIY  Quote
Guest codeowner Posted April 19, 2008 Posted April 19, 2008 Hi Everyone. This is my 1st dip into this excellent forum! My wife has just acquired a new C1 code which also had a problem with a rear end rattle.Following the comment about the antenna under the rear seat above - I did check my wife's car in this area.I did not find anything loose but I did discover that the underside of the rear seat can rattle against the metal below it.Just right of the centre there is a metal cover below the seat and the seat springing was rattling against it.The fix was to fit some foam over the springing! If you would like to lift your rear seat - At the front edge there are 2 lugs, just pull these upwards and the base will lift (can be quite tight). To refit simply relocate the 2 lugs and push back into place. Guest codeowner Posted April 19, 2008 Posted April 19, 2008 Although not apparent on my C1 i have noticed that the rear and front seat belt lower anchorage points could tend to rattle! Can anyone identify a source for the correct size rubber washers mentioned above? Quote
ColinC1 Posted April 19, 2008 Author Posted April 19, 2008 Although not apparent on my C1 i have noticed that the rear and front seat belt lower anchorage points could tend to rattle! Can anyone identify a source for the correct size rubber washers mentioned above?I sorted my back ones as follows.... http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g293/greatchi/B%20team/washer.jpg Look at them close and you will see built in deliberate slackness between the metal bracket that holds the belt and the actual anchorage bolt, so it can swivel in the bolt. This allows the belt to angle itself to suit when the wearer has it on. Thats where it rattles. Now unbolt the anchorage bolt, and fit a washer as my photo. I could not get a manufacturered rubber washer to fit, so I cut some out from a piece of 4mm thick rubber sheeting using scissors. Inside diameter is slightly bigger than the bolt thickness, and outside diameter bigger than the metal collar just behind the bolt head. When you retighten up the bolt, the rubber takes up the slackness, but will still allow the metal bracket to swivel, though slightly stiffer. Its an easy job, takes about 15 minutes per anchorage point, and no more rattle  Quote

Martin_1973_uk Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 I'm not sure as the speaker size would have to be fairly small. Could be worth cutting a few large ones in the back parcel shelf as well. If you find any let us know. Quote
