Hi Guys, just a quick post.

Took my car in for the 20k service today (£170 including 15% discount - seemed steep but wanted the dealer stamp). Anyway, they have told me the discs and pads need to be changed on the front. Has anyone else had to change discs/pads? This early?

I must admit I took a wheel off and the disk is ridged, so probably does need replacing.

Next question, I was quoted £320 for the front discs and pads fitted, which seems astronomical! Has anyone had this done? What did you pay, and where?

They said the genuine parts cost just under £100, so thats £220 fitting. Also said non-citroen parts will invalidate warranty.

Thanks in advance,

JW.

I'm afraid this is how dealers make their profit these days. Discs are softer steel than they were in the past since asbestos pads were banned, so they do need to be replaced fairly regularly.

A 3 year warranty is great if major problems occur, but it is annoying that you are stopped from doing a bit of DIY for fear of losing the protection :)

Hi, thanks for your reply. What do you think about the quote Citroen have given me? Is it really 4 hours labour to change the disks and pads? I'm happy that £100 for the components isn't too bad (although after-market parts can be picked up for £60), but I'm struggling to accept the £220 labour.

I've never touched the discs on my C1, but I changed the pads and discs on a BX and it didn't take an amateur like me any where near 4 hours. It might be worth calling Citroen to find out what the official time estimate is.

Don't forget that whilst you do have to use Citroen parts to maintain the warranty, the work doesn't have to be done be a Citroen dealer.

For a job like that, most garages will give a definite quote for the job rather than an 'estimate'.

Personally I think dealers change discs far too soon, probably as a money making excercise. But this is only my opinion !!!

You don't have to go to a main dealer to still be in warranty. They use this as a tool to keep on charging those excessive amounts which they have to do to pay for the franchise. Car Makers have been fined for this before and at that price I would take the risk and get the work done by a cheaper dealer.

Also I would get a second opinion as they do like to change things early to get that extra money in.

The manufacturers recommended labour charge is .9 of an hour the Citroen Dealer my husband works for would do the job for £180 inclusive of parts labour and VAT

Just an update on this (a very late update - sorry!). I stopped using the garage I was using as I lost trust in them - I'm now using an independent Citroen Specialist and they've said they're fine. Now done 37k and I'm expecting this time they may well need changing.
