Guest Richard37 Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 Hi all, I've come across this wonderful forum while searching for info on my beloved Xantia (1997 1800i est - petrol). I know this problem is going to lead me to the garage but forewarned is forearmed (so they say!!) The problem is this: out of the blue... I notice my heater failing to warm up (normally its great!) and in addition the engine temp is heading towards 100ºC - On investigation the radiator is stone cold? I'm not very mechanically minded but i figure for some reason my coolant is not circulating; I’m guessing possibilities include water pump, thermostat or perhaps a major leak (though no sign of dumped water). I would be mega grateful for any info or ideas on this matter before i lay my self at the mercy of my local garage. Thanks in advance Richard Quote
Guest Colin Hunter Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 Hi Richard. Welcome aboard! Sounds like the 'stat to me, but may be the pump. I have heard that on some pumps the impeller can "let go" on the shaft when it gets hot and cause this problem. Change the 'stat first then suspect the pump. The pump is not easy to change as it is driven from the cambelt , but if you have to change it you can do the tensioener and belt all at the same time! They do say every cloud has a silver lining! Well! This is it! HI HO etc God bless Geoff Beck! Cheers. Hope this helps. :) Quote
Guest Richard37 Posted April 8, 2008 Posted April 8, 2008 Cheers, fingers crossed for the stat :) Quote
Guest Richard37 Posted April 8, 2008 Posted April 8, 2008 Hi again, update time... I have made a discovery, the car will run fine all working then all of a sudden it reverts to previous bad mode.I have discovered that water is circulating (water pump, thermostat ok?) then after idling water is being dumped from the rear of the engine, location wise the engine is tilted back and water is coming from behind about a foot from the top of the engine !!!!! Is this really bad ? Thanks in advance Richard (a nervous xantia owner) Quote
Guest Colin Hunter Posted April 8, 2008 Posted April 8, 2008 It sounds very much like the plastic moulding which forms the "back" of the water pump has failed. This is quite well known on the XU engine and also happened on my son's 1.4i (TU) ZX. What happens is that the groove that the "O" ring lives in cracks and allows the "O" ring to float around, sometimes sealing OK and sometimes not. If in any doubt, ask the guys at your local dealership how to go about changing it and if they know of anything else it could be. It wasn't too bad to do on the 1.4, I took off the inlet manifold and it was easily accessible just underneath it. I daresay that given a pit or a lift it could be got at from underneath, up the back of the engine. Cheers Hope this helps. :) Quote
Guest Richard37 Posted April 8, 2008 Posted April 8, 2008 Thanks Colin, Guess I'll find out for sure tomorrow as it's booked into the garage, its just a shame i can't actually see where the leak is. I will report back what they find. Thanks again, Richard Quote
Guest Richard37 Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 Sob sob... Oily garage man say head gasket kaputt (though he can't actually see where leak is other than below exhaust manifold!). Gutted, cars a write off Richard (ex citroen owner forum member)boo hoo Quote

Guest Mikey Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 No heating and cold radiator. It's a circulation problem. Sounds like it's definitely the water pump. Quote
Guest Richard37 Posted April 10, 2008 Posted April 10, 2008 That was my initial thoughts, but with the water topped up all works perfectly... until you stop then there is a major leak from just below the exhaust manifold at the back of the engine. Unfortunatley the location of the leak can't be seen from above or below. Garage was pretty convinced it is the head gasket. Cheers, Richard (confused?) Quote
