Guest Colin Hunter Posted April 11, 2008 Posted April 11, 2008 Hello there Flitwick! I bought a P reg 1.4i ZX 3 years ago as a non runner for £250 to fix up to teach my son to drive. It had done 97,000 miles at the time and cost me a couple of hundred more to put it on the road and MOT it. It's done 115,000 now and still going like a dream. It's easy to work on, parts are cheap as chips and it's nice to drive. Over the last 3 years I don't think it's cost me a grand! That's cheap motoring in anybody's language! Perhaps the best one to go for if you're not contemplating much mileage would be a 1.4 petrol as they only cost £125 a year tax. all the others including the diesels are above 1560cc and will be £210. The 1.4 is only group 5 or 6 insurance, all the others are 8 or 9 (Or higher) Obviously, buy the newest, lowest milage one you can find, the later ones are almost fully galvanised so rust shouldn't be a problem. The place where they rust here in Shetland (Rust capital of the WORLD!) is behind the head lamps on the Chassis legs so if there's no rust there then there shouldn't be any anywhere else! The last of the 1.4s had multipoint injection (Late P into R) which is much better than the single point on the earlier cars. Another good thing about the ZX is there's plenty of dead ones around to rob bits off if the need arises. They're not without their problems as I daresay you've noticed if you've read the forums, but none of them are insurmountable if you have the time and are prepared to get you hands dirty occasionally. You're right in assuming they're the same as a 306. The engines, gearboxes, brakes and suspension are basically the same with very minor differences. Some parts will fit both cars, some won't. Cheers. Hope this helps. ;) Quote
