hi to all,just drove to france and back for a weeks fishing,on coming back noticed when you change up or down to 3rd there is a crunching noise coming from only 3rd, my car is axnita estate 1.9td 1998 any idears

With the age of the car it's likely that the synchro mesh on 3rd is getting a wee bit tired. Either that, or the clutch wants adjusting. It may not be freeing properly as you change gear. That's not likely though, or you would have even worse problems selecting gears from a standstill.

 

Try changing gears more slowly,or "Double declutch" particularly coming down the box to see if the crunching disappears or gets less. I know my own Xantia ( '98 110 HDi with 74,000 miles) needs slower changes these days, especially when the gearbox oil is cold, to avoid noisy changes, particularly into 3rd gear. The lads ZX 1.4i (112,00 miles) is the same. (but worse!)
