Just having a nose around my Xantia today and under the passenger's side seat there is an orange wire with the connector in the middle which I presume is something to do with pretensioners. There are two wires underneath the drivers side but they are not connected, one of the connector blocks has a big resistor in it, leaving the other connector not connecting anywhere, as far as I can tell it the one that goes under the carpet that has the resistor.

Is this some sort of quick fix for a common problem?

Should I be worried?

Hi There.

Yes it sounds very much like someone has had a fault come up on the "airbag" system, which includes the pretensioners, and has traced it to that component, namely the drivers seat pretensioner. The resistor will have been put in the plug to fool the system into thinking that it is connected and all is well. You'll be able to sort it by getting one off the seat base of a "scrapper" which may still be OK and putting it on your car. There must be some way to test these things to see if they are still servicable, but I have been told that even using a multi meter on them to see if you have continuity is enough to set them off.

Before you start connecting and disconnecting these pyrotechnic devices you should disconnect the battery and leave the car for 10 mins or so to allow any residual voltages to dissipate. Be sure you know the radio code before you do this.

As it stands, your car has no pretensioner on the drivers seat, so if you have a bump, you won't be quite as safe as if it was working, as it won't pull you back when it fires.

If you can live with that, it won't be a problem

Cheer. Hope this helps
