Guest Colin Hunter Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Hello Kentdude! It's not really the kind of thing you can do at home unless you have the proper equipment and the proper gas (R134A) and oil (not sure what type). The aircon specialists and main dealers have a machine which they couple to the system. The machine will firstly pump out any remaining oil and gas in the system and reclaim it. It then pumps the system down to a vaccuum and then switches off. This has two purposes. To remove any moisture from the system andif the system holds the vaccuum for a certain time it proves the system has no leaks. If the vaccuum is held for the required time the machine will then inject the amount of oil and gas required by that particular system. This has to be quite precise for the system to work as is should. There are other types of test rigs which some of the older places will use which have High and low pressure side gauges, and these are quite satisfactory if you know what the readings should be. With refrigerant systems, the pressure generally corresponds to a temperature. If you have too little gas in a system it will be inefficient and may not even run, depending on how sophisticated the control system is. Another symptom of too little gas is a low evaporator temperature which will eventually ice up the evaporator and restrict air flow and heat transfer. Too much gas can lead to a carry over of liquid back from the evaporator to the compressor which WILL wreck it. SO! it's not really just a case of coupling up a bottle of gas to the system and "giving it a wee sniff". It is a job best left to the people with the right gear. Cheers. Sorry can't help as to where the couplings are! :( Quote
