i just bought a 2005 c3 1.6 diesel sx last friday, i test drove it twice to get a feel for it and listen for any noises, all seemed fine. The car was fully serviced etc when i got it from the dealer but i've noticed now when i'm parked and we're all either getting in or out of the car theres a loud creaking noise from the back? Does anyone know what could be causing it? neither myself or my partner are over weight so i dont think we're over loading the car

many thanks

Hi Lisa,

Try leaving the car in gear with the handbrake off and then see if it makes a creaking noise. If the noise has gone then you know it's the handbrake, Mine does this occassionally, I just apply it one more notch up then the noise goes.

Thanks for that i'll try it this evening, i think i always have a fear of pulling the handbrake too hard ever since i had a bad experience in my dodgy last (very old) car causing me to become stranded up a mountain with no houses in sight and no mobile phone signal

I'd suggest what smokescreen has mentioned.

Did you know that the handbook specifically states that you should also press the footbrake down when applying the handbrake on the C3?

My C3 has creaked on and off since I got it 5 years ago, so I wouldn't worry about it. Making sure the handbrake is fully applied seems to resolve it.

I did ask at the dealer about the creaking at the first service and got some flannel about difference between the "atmospherics" in France and the UK.....

when the handbrake is on and the shoes make contact with the drum getting in and out makes both shoes and drum turn slightley. the noise comes from the shoe rubbing against the back plate when it moves. a dab of copper slip sorts it.

My C3 2005 made this noise from new I have covered 49,000 miles on the same set of brakes front and rear front 50% worn and 30% worn.

So the noise dont't affect the operation or make them wear quicker.

But the copper tone on the rear plate sounds like a good notion if it happens on me new one.

Thanks
