Guest Chris N Posted May 17, 2008 Posted May 17, 2008 My car won't start. It ran out of a fuel , i've filled the tank with 2 gallons and it won't start. It ran for 10 seconds twice and then stalls! Is it air in the fuel system? how will i get rid of it if it is? I have the 1.4i multipoint injection engine. Please Help Chris Quote
Guest Colin Hunter Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 Hi there. It's quite likely that since you ran out of fuel the system has pulled some muck out of the tank and choked the filter. A few questions. Can you hear the fuel pump running when you turn on the ignition? It should run for a few seconds and then stop if you don't crank the engine. If you remove to fuel feed pipe are you getting fuel through while the pump is running? If not, then the filter is choked. Make sure you have a can or a bottle to catch the fuel and have someone with you to turn off the ignition if the fuel comes through. It may possibly be that you haven't put enough in the tank for the pump to pick up suction properly although this is unlikely. If all else fails, try a bit more fuel but my bets are on the filter. Cheers. Hope this helps. ;) Quote
Guest Chris N Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 I'm sure that 2 gallons should be enough hopefully , where and how do i take the fuel feed pipe off , sorry! The fuel pump should engage in the position just before the start motors engages? Is changing the fuel filter difficult ? , if it's not that bad i'll do that anyway as a precaution. Local motoman should stock one hopefully Chris Quote
Guest Colin Hunter Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 Turn on the ignition so that all the dash warning lights come on, but don't crank the engine. You should hear a distant whirring from the rear of the car. If you do not crank the engine you should hear it stop after a time. Take the fuel feed pipe off where it joins onto the fuel rail on the engine (The injector feed pipe) and see if you're getting fuel through. The filter should be under the car near the tank at the rear in the supply line. If you are in any doubt about any of this, consult a mechanic to get it sorted out. Cheers. Quote
Guest Chris N Posted May 18, 2008 Posted May 18, 2008 I had a look today. The fuel pump is making a sound and hopefully working! Removing the fuel line to the rail is a little tricky it has an odd kind of a hose clamp and a weird fitting , hopefully i'll be able to take it off without damaging the line. I have ordered the new filter and i have located the old one. What to i clamp the fuel supply line to the filter with to stop the tank draining while changing the filter? Thanks for you help colin Chris Quote
