downsman Posted May 26, 2008 Posted May 26, 2008 I'm afraid I don't know, but as it's under warranty you'd have to get a dealer to fit it. So best contact your dealer. Having said that I bet it would be prohibitively expensive <_< Quote
Martin_1973_uk Posted May 26, 2008 Posted May 26, 2008 It was a £600 option when new so I would guess it is very expensive. I had mine a year now and I haven't really had to use it in the UK. Window down seems fine, so I would save your money. Quote

ColinC1 Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 With AC units in any car, there is one crucial rule... USE IT OR LOSE IT Many people get caught out by not using the AC in winter, as something will pack in through non-use, whether the gasses or moving parts. You must use for at least a few minutes every week. In summer, well it will be used.In winter, it is usefull for demisting the windscreen, when on full recirc. Remember to take it off full recirc when finished. Quote
Guest andyp Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 I never switch mine off, it makes less than 1mpg difference and is much better for the aircon system. Quote

Martin_1973_uk Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 I find I lose power when pulling away if the compressor kicks in at just that moment? The engine is a little weak to be having Aircon so I tend to use it just 10 mins a month. With the Summers we have I don't think it will ever be needed anyway. If you haven't got it, you won't miss it I'm sure. Quote
downsman Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 I find I lose power when pulling away if the compressor kicks in at just that moment? That's interesting. I haven't got aircon on my C1, I went for the Vibe to save money. I don't notice the pump effect on our 1.6 Berlingo, so I thought they'd got round that somehow. I used to have a Mondeo with aircon a few years ago and you could feel the pump coming on even at motorway speeds B) Quote
Guest PaulGP Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 I got a/c on my Aygo for £500. I have just started using it & have found it great. Only losing about 1-2 mpg so far. It is gonna cost you more fuel driving with the windows down than it is to have the a/c on. Quote
Martin_1973_uk Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 I'm surprised you don't hear or feel it cut in. It's like a click then a thump then the engine revs rise. I've had my car a year now and have only needed to really use it once. I manage to get mine for £250 as the car was already coming in to the dealer so he gave me a good deal. Quote
stimulator Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 Re feeeling the aircon cutting in and out. On some cars the aircon unit is allowed to cycle on others it's designed to offload rather than cut in and out so the action is not felt. Retro fitting aircon is expensive, requires the follwoing.Compressor & fitting bracketCondenser unitDryerEvaporatorPipeworkWiringNew heater boxNew facia control paneletc. It would be cheaper to sell your current car and buy one with A/C fitted. Diesel engined cars have more low end torque and therefore the a/c load is not felt as much as petrol cars On C3 diesels the mpg difference is approx 2mpg, I have two diesel C3s and both have auto aircon and are run continuously year in year out. Dial up the temp required and leave alone. The advantages no steamed up windows winter summer autumn or spring. Comfortable driving environment. The mpg loss by opening a window is greater than that of running an a/c. Not running the a/c on a car fitted with one for at least 5 mins a week will result in the syetm leaking its refrigerant. This is because the seals in the system, especially the compressor are kept supple and lubricated by the oil contained in the refridgerant. Would I go back to a NON A/C fitted car? simply never same as I wouldn't go back to a non diesel car. Mobile a/c is not new, what is though is the technology. Cars used to be fitted with A/C if the engine size was 2 litres or above as older generation a/c's were power sappers. Technology now means that you can have a/c on small engined cars, Matiz 803, 3cylinder car had a/c, OK it sapped power but was still a drivable car. I have driven cars where the a/c unit was cut out at revs below 1100 rpm to prevent the engine stalling and to pass the car in front you changed down, switched off the A/C passed, changed up switched on the A/C.
