hi guys, i'm new to this kind of thing so any help greatly appreciated. I have a 51-plate citroen xsara 2.0 16v sx, and there is a 'rattling' type noise whenever i accelerate. it happens whatever speed i am doing. to best descibe it as; its like a hollow pipe with something rattling inside, coming from the front of the car, maybe towards the rear of the engine. it doesn't rattle when i start the engine up, or when it is stood idle, only when i accelarate. i dont know much about engines and the like, so any help would be great. thanks.

hi

i've a 1.4 i xsara and i had a rattle from the rear of the engine which sounded the same as your car ! after going through loads of checks  a guy from a citroen dealer said it could be your exhaust middle box baffles they are are prone for vibrating loose inside  , i had a full exhaust fitted last week and guess what NO NOISE  and is a lot quiter.

if you can get your car up on a lift bang the middle exhaust box and see if you can hear anything.

if you need to put anything else up about the xsara put it up here....

Hi

I don't know if you ever got this sorted out, but.............

Your noise sounds a lot like what used to be known as "pinking".

I don't know if this happens on modern cars with electronic ignition, fuel injection.

But on older cars is was generally an indication of either incorrect fuel-grade, or ignition timing incorrectly set.
