Guest mark b Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 HI All, I've been told the steering rack gaiters need replacing in a recent MOT on my M reg Xantia, and wondering if anyone knows how long this should take....? Heard a rumour that the entire rack needs to be removed and it is a 3 or 4 hour job? Can anyone confirm this? Cheers Mark Quote
Guest Colin Hunter Posted June 27, 2008 Posted June 27, 2008 Can't see why! I would think that all that you would need to do would be to remove the track rod ends and slide off the old and on the new gaiters, then do up the clips that hold them in place. I had a look in the Haynes manual but it says nothing about it. It might be awkward because of the position of the rack, but I can't see why you'd have to take the whole thing out. My advice would be to ask at your local dealers at the same time you "enquire" about the price of the spare gaiters. Sorry can't be more help. :D Quote
Guest mark b Posted June 27, 2008 Posted June 27, 2008 Thanks for the advice Colin. I've asked around and although it is apparently a bit of pain in terms of access as you say, it seems the estimate of 3 or 4 hours is a very generous one. CheersMark Quote
barcelona Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 My mechanic charged me £45 to replace a split gaiter (incl gaiter). Don't know how long it took him, I would guess about an hour? Quote
