Hello everyone

I have a V reg rover 25 (6 years I've owned it no trouble) however I needing to change it. Due mostly to my parents getting older and as I am the chosen one.... for hospital appointments etc etc...I need something higher than the Rover, it also needs to have 4 doors and room in the back for the dogs...and as I like having days weekends away I would like the room the Berlingo offers.....I am not a motorway driver (not against it just like the scenery and foibles of B roads) I walk to work, although it would be used daily for shopping/dog walking etc.

I am looking for reliability, the height, the space. Am I looking at the right car for those three looking to spend about £5,000 so my question what should I be looking for?

I used to have a Peugeot Partner (same thing apart fom the badges !), and i really liked it, it was great to drive apart from being a bit slow as it was the old 1.9 diesel !

The main drawback is that they depreciate slower than any other Citroen so are not a great bargain as a used buy, also the equipment levels are a bit on the mean side !

Have you considered a Picasso, excellent access to both the front and back seats, especially for anyone with mobility problems (i have a back problem and struggle to get in and out of a normal car)and a huge boot. They are also much better equiped.

I have a 1.6 petrol and it is very economical to run too.

£5000 will buy you a decent 2004/2005 Picasso, personally i wouldn't buy a desel unless you do a lot of miles as they cost more to buy in the first place and more to service, plus diesel is a lot more expensive than petrol now.

We have just bought an 03 2.0 HDi Berlingo, my wife is very pleased it. The sliding doors on the rear are ideal for kids as they cant slam them into walls etc, however if your passengers have mobility problems they might find it difficult to get in and out, as the access is forward of the seat and slighly narrow.

diesel more expensive than petrol to service? Is that true, my van just needs an air filter, a fuel filter and an oil change once a year, then glo plugs every two, surely petrol is the more expensive to service?

I've recently bought a new (not the new model) 2008 1.4 HDI 92bhp Berlingo Desire. This has replaced my Petrol 1.4 Renault Kangoo which I had from new for 7 yrs. If the Citroen performs as well as the Kangoo did, (never any problems) then I'll be a happy chappie. So far I've only put 1500 mls on the clock, & am well suited with the car. Storage space is amazing with the overhead module. Whereas the new Kangoo has the side lockers fitted in the style of aircraft lockers, which IMHO just don't look right. The all new Berlingo for 2008, again IMHO isn't to my liking. Even the dealer commented on it being too van-like & ugly looking. The flared wheel arches (similar to my Kangoo) looked good on the preview pics. but in reality, they look like an afterthought. So all in all I'm happy with the Berlingo & would recommend one, even an older one, as another forum I contribute to, has members praising the marque.
