Hi

My wife has a 55 reg C4 VTR+ 5 door 1.6 petrol.

It has had a few minor problems such as an air-con fluid leak which soaked the front passanger carpet and more recently the entire car displays (radio, rev counter etc) turned off while whe was driving although were fine the next day.

The car has only done 15000 miles and is used mainly do drive our 2 year old daughter about safely.

The other day when she was driving, the depollution light and warning came on and then 2 minutes later the clutch 'went'. I say this beacuse I'm not a mechanic but basically despite the engine revving normally, virtually no power went to the wheels.

The RAC towed us to the service garage who have since looked at it and said the clutch has 'worn naturally' and is not covered by the warranty.

I have spoken to head office who do not seem to care but it seems to me that this is not the whole story. Why would the depollution waning come on at the same time, why would the clutch go after 15,000 miles driven sensibly by an experienced driver.

Has anyone else had these problems and should Citroen to cover the clutch under warranty?

It is not uncommon for the clutches in the 1.6 to go early on. Mine went at 8000 miles. Think there was someone else on here a while ago who never even made it to 5000. And quite a few with less than 10k who had them replaced. All done under warranty.

It was somewhat more common on the earlier cars. 04/05 but the newer ones I have seen no issues with. But the fact is this is something that has happened before and a good few times. Also affected some of the 2.0's and 1.4's as well. But the 1.6 petrol is the most common to go.

Getting them to replace it however might be a bit of a struggle. But if you can get together a few other forum posts on here about the clutches then it might help if you print them off and prove it is not as rare as it sounds.

As Wozza says, what you describe is not unknown on 55 plate 1.6 petrols - exactly the same happened to my brother's 1.6. However it was some time ago, but there was no problem with a repair under warranty.

Many thanks

I've had to fight for this but finally got through to a reginal manager who agreed to cover the cost although he says that as far as he is concerned there are no problems with the clutches on these cars!

Least they are willing to take up the costs. Which is a result.

There were definitely problems with the clutches on a number of the cars though. Too many of us on here for it to be purely down to us. Clutches just don't fail with 8000 miles on them.
