This sounds like a water circulation problem. We had a generator engine on one of our tugs which exhibited similar symptoms. Everything was checked, thermostat(s) included but it still overheated after about 1/2 an hours running. It turned out that, as the engine heated up, the water pump impeller expanded more than the shaft and, when the engine was hot, it "let go" of the shaft and "freewheeled", so not pumping the water round the cooling circuit.

To prove it we took the pump off the engine (cold) and it seemed OK. We put it in a (large) pan and brought it to the boil on the stove. When it was hot the impeller just span on the shaft! Renewing the shaft/impeller assembly cured the problem.

Most modern cars have the pump driven by the cambelt so they're not straightforward to change. If your car is high mileage it may be coming due a cambelt change anyway. It is a good idea to change the belt tensioners AND the water pump at the same time as they are a fraction of the cost of the job.

Cheers. Hope this helps.

Try www.gsfcarparts.com (German, Swedish & French) which sell good quality parts at VERY reasonable prices. They have an online shop and also many local outlets. Check the website for details. There may be one near you. I have dealt with them quite a bit over the years and have never had any problems with any of their parts.

Just a thought. After you re-filled the system after the cambelt & Pump change, did you bleed it properly? You don't say how long it's been since the change so was it OK at first? It may just be an airlock if it's always been like it since the change.

Cheers.
