I have a 2.2 C5 Citroen. Heater in the car only works on fast speed, not on the three slower speeds. Can i ask, is the switch controlled from a relay? and where would the relay be situated?

any advice would be appreciated

thanks! :-)

Hi Taxibill. This sounds like it might be a variation on the very common fan resistor failure. Normally if the fan speed resistor fails you get no fan at all but yours may have decided to be extra difficult and only partly fail. As I say it's a common problem on the C5 and if you have a car with air conditioning a new resistor is about £20 but if you have climate control it's about £50. I have only replaced it on a C5 with climate control and it's situated in the heater trunking it self just to the left of the clutch pedal. I hope this helps.

Mine is dead too and I'm finding it quite difficult to get at without causing damage to the trunking - I assume I am approaching the problem incorrectly, any tips recieved with gratitude (Climate Control model)

HI Myglaren. It's a while since I replaced the resistor on my car but I don'tremember it being very difficult. As I recollect there were 2 screws holding the unit on to the trunking and I do remember someone else saying they could only get 1 screw back in at that the 2nd srew was almost impossible to replace but I certaintly got both of mine back ok. If you don't have any success get back to me and I'll go and stick my head under the dash and remind myself how I did it.

Thanks Malcolm.

I couldn't identify the unit once all the trim was removed but the car has been in for a service the past few days and the auto electrician popped in to the garage and had a look at it, reckoned it was the switch on the dash as the unit in question was live but not receiving a signal from the fan switches.

Probably just as well I didn't go and buy a new unit before accessing the installed one.

@ Malcolm.......hey i'll take some advice on where this resistor is. Fan only works at hurricane levels now, the car has air con, Mk1, how do i get to it and where can a replacement be picked up..........literally a resistor or a small unit for the fan system?

cheers

I bought a new resistor pack (it isn't really as I have the climate control one).

Using it as a guide I found where they had hidden the one in the car - it is to the left of the clutch pedal up where it hinges, behind a piece of cloth trim - I have removed all sorts of bits and have yet to replace them, harder than changing the unit, once located.

There are two crosshead screws that are also fortunately small hex-heads (bolts) and I found it reasonably easy to remove and replace the unit with a little awkwardness in getting to the top screw, using a nut driver of around 6mm.
