Hi All,

I have an M reg 1994 zx estate turbo diesel, its been superb and i love it to bits, but ive just discovered that both sills are rusting thru' both front and back,is this the end of my beloved car?

Ive just had a bit of welding done undereath which was easy and cheap, but im not so sure if the sills can be fixed so easily.

Im new here but ive used this site for a while and its very good and im hoping for some advice,

Thanks,

Alistair

Hi Alistair.

It's nice to hear from someone who appreciates what a nice little car the ZX actually is.

To be fair to you, I think your car is past redemption. not because it's impossible to fix it, rather the fact that you'll spend much more than the vehicle is worth fixing it up. The ZX started off with only the outer panels galvanised, but later models were almost fully treated in this way, leading to much less of a rust problem. I'm not sure when the transition to full galvanising came to pass, but I know that L reg were NOT. My son's P reg is, and leads a rust free existence, even in Shetland, the rust capital of the world!

My advice to you would be to cut your losses and buy another, later, ZX. there are still plenty about, try Autotrader for instance, there are 54 for sale, from £200 to £1300 which is far too much, but never mind. If you scrap the car you'll get a fair amount for it these days, given the value of scrap metal. You can always transfer seats and interior trim from your old car if it's in better nick.

Cheers. Hope this helps. :o
