Hi Martin.

The basic cause of black smoke is too much fuel for the air to burn. When You accelerate you are putting in much more fuel than when you are cruising and the engine is unable to burn it cleanly with the amount of air that is available. This could be down to two or three (Basic) things.

  1. The air cleaner is choked leading to air starvation as you go higher up the rev band. Changing the filter should cure this.
  2. The person who had the car before you has meddled with the fuel pump settings to get a bit more "Go". Check that the seals are intact on the adjustment screws. If they're not then you may have to have it reset. This is unlikely though.
  3. The injectors are past their best and are not atomising the fuel as well as they once did, leading to smoke under load. A dose of injector cleaner through the fuel system once in a while will keep them good.

My first port of call would be the air filter. They don't cost much and are easy to change.A dose of injector cleaner won't do any harm either.

Cheers. Hope this helps. :D
