I have just had the front discs and pads replaced on my 2000 Xantia.

After 2 weeks, the ABS light has come on (and goes out only intermitently).

It is usually on from a cold start but when the brakes are used for the first time and coming to a slow gentle braked stop at the end of my side road, I can feel the ABS kicking the pedal, which it shouldn't do.

Once I have got it this does not happen and I have checked that the ABS is NOT working by trying a skid stop (safely of course!!) and the front wheels lock up.

What is making the ABS stop working?

cheers

Ian

Hi Ian.

There are two likely and reasonably easily fixable possibilities.

  1. You have a dodgy abs sensor, most likely on one of the front wheels. There is information in these forums about testing sensors with a meter to ascertain which is the faulty one. Alternatively a dealer will be able to do a diagnostic check, tell you which one it is and supply the spare part. They're not too awkward to fit if you have access under the car and remove the undertray.
  2. The abs "Reluctor ring" has failed and come loose on the CV joint. Unfortunately, Citroen do not supply them separately, preferring to sell you a whole new shaft. However there is a firm who make them and can either supply or fit tyhem for you. Have a look at Reluctor rings .com

Until you get it sorted, find out which fuse supplies the ABS and pull it out. You'll then have normal brakes but the car won't pass an MOT til it's sorted.

Cheers Hope this helps
