Demister Fan Always On

Hi All

 

I wonder if you could help me. The demister fan on my 2004 citroen xsara has just developed a fault where the fan is on full strength as soon as I turn the engine on and will not turn down or off. Any idea what this may be ? I've found some items relating to a faulty rheostat which sounds likely but if that is the case how hard is it to get to ?

 

I've booked it in with a local garage but after the short intake of breath I was told they may need to take the entire dashboard off to get to it and quoted me a price of "hundreds and hundreds". (Don't you just love garage talk :-)
