Guest Boilk Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 Hi, I have been helping a friend change a passenger side wheel bearing on his 2004 Berlingo multispace. When we had removed the bearing carrier assebly we noticed that the inner CV joint doesn't seem to be retained in the gearbox like most cars do. It is just free to slide in & out - is this normal? It doesn't seem to want to push into the gearbox any further as the joint is as close to the gearbox as it can go. We did not pull on the shaft in any way when we pushed the outer CV joint through the hub when removing it, in fact if anything we would have been pushing on the shaft. Whenever I have removed driveshafts on other cars they usually have to be "snapped" out of the gearbox with a prybar or something similar. I have pressed out the old hub bearing & put in the new but am reluctant to put everything back together until I know the inner joint is secure in the gearbox. Any advice would be appreciated. Quote

I changed the bearings on mine a few times. The driveshaft does come right out if you are not carefull. I have drawn mine a bit too far most times and lost a drop of oil from the gearbox. Quote

Thank you - so does the driveshaft inner joint not have any kind of retaining circlip at all & just relies on the fact it cannot go anywhere when the hub/bearing is in place? The one on the car i've been working on dripped some of oil when the shaft came out too far but stopped when I pushed it back in. Quote

I had the haynes book as well. There was no retaining clip and it all seemed to slide back together when the hub and wishbone was rebuilt. Quote
