I fitted a JVC CD/Radio/USB unit, and it was a piece of cake, apart from finding somewhere for all the adapter cabling to go. It's a bit crowded in there, and the additional ISO bypass connectors and steering control adapter are bulky. Electrically, though, it required no tricks, just standard unit out, add adapters, plug in new unit.

Whether or not this is true for all years of car remains to be seen - ours is a '53.

By the way - don't forget that this is best done after ensuring that the BSI has hibernated, or even with the battery disconnected!

Nobody seems to be in the least bit clued-up on this subject, and results appear to be mixed (at best!) so this is my two-penn'orth. As the car had a BSI fault when we bought it, and seeing the internal state of the original stereo when I finally took it apart*, I suspect it's all too easy to screw the BSI with injudicious connecting and disconnecting of audio.

That said, I'm quite impressed with the standard speakers' performance, bearing in mind how cr@p the Picasso's were.

By the way, the JVC KD-G631 seems to be quite well matched to the car's standard speakers (if you don't give it max welly, mind) but looks hideous in the dash - clashes terribly with everything!

(* screws missing, CD tray flapping, bent levers....)
