Hi,

Any ideas how much it is likely to cost to have a front ball joint and wheel bearing replaced on a 2003 03 1.4hdi C3 (non ABS)?

The car went into the local dealership earlier in the year as I thought the front springs had gone again (I had them both replaced two years ago). I was told that the springs were fine, and that it was the ball joint that needed replaced. There is a slight knocking when driving on uneven road surfaces, and also a 'clunk' when first turning the steering wheel after the car has been sat for any length of time.

I'll be taking the car to an independant garage in Cumbria - any rough ideas of cost would be appreciated, as I'm never sure if I'm being hugely overcharged or it's a fair price!

Many thanks.

Andrea.

I've just bought a 2002 C3 1.4HDi and my trusted mechanic gave it a once over and I'm having the following replaced (no big problems, but one wishbone bush starting to crack and slight play in a couple of wheel bearings, slight wobble when braking):

Both front brake disc and pads

Both front bottom wishbones (with balljoint) - decided good practice to replace the balljoints at same time.

1 rear wheel bearing

1 front wheel bearing

Looking at the total cost of the parts (at trade price) my mechanic had quoted to him and knowing the cost of the discs and wishbones the cost of the wheel bearings was @£80 for the two. Suspect the front @£45 and rear @£35. The wishbones are costing £42. Fitting on top of this.

I also have a slight clunk in the circumstances you describe and suspect it's related to the items I'm replacing.

The balljoints bolt off of the wishbones and are available separately if that's all you need to replace.

I'm in Fife, Scotland, the garage I use is in West Lothian.
