When you say usually how do you mean. Does it some times play up even when the car is not started because if it does then there is a good case that the lazer is twitching about or about to burn out or if some one did a lot of smoking in there they can get a slight film on them as in the lazer eye. I think Halfords do a CD DVD lazer eye cleaner its just a cd that you bang in the player. I would try that first then if no joy maybe think about doing a voltage check on the live to the radio when the car is stopped and then started then also check the earth and if kneaded link a new earth to rule that out. I take it the radio will turn on and light up when the car is started.

Hi my 2002 2l diesel c5 saloon (193,000 miles and still going)does exactly the same.....when the engine is switched off i can use both the radio or the cd player and toggle between the two with the steering column control and move up and down tracks and stations and adjust the volume etc.....but as soon as i turn the key and start the engine running then thats it...i only have the radio...i can still adjust the volume and change radio stations with the column control but as for the cd.....well its like its non existant....when the engines on, the cd player stops and becomes unresponsive to the column control and i only have the radio.....but when i switch the engine off....hey presto i have the use of both again...all suggestions welcome
