C3 1.4 Hdi (2004) Power Loss

Hi all

First visit to the site and hoping that someone out there can help me.

My 2004 C3 1.4 HDI has become gutless! If if rev it up through the gears I can only achieve maximum 2500 rpm before it flattens out. It feels like it's fuel starved. If I climb a hill it struggles like mad to get up it and if I dare to try and overtake I can find myself in a very dodgy position.

The car is still very capable of popping along the motorway at 70 mph even though it takes a while to get there but if I was to put my foot right down there is nothing more to be had. To describe it a little better it is like a petrol engined car driving normally and one of the spark plugs starts breaking down and running on three cylinders.

PLEASE let it be simple and cheap!!

Sounds like the EGR is stuck, you find it on the exhaust manifold, remove it and degunk it (wire brush and carburretor cleaner) it could also be the Mass air detector in the air intake, however that can only be replaced, you can check it visually, if you remove it there should be a very fine wire visible, if it is broken that is the fault. Unfortunately it cant be repaired only replaced. I had both go together the ERG was just over £40 and the air sensor was £80 both plus VAT and fitting.
