  1. Thanks for the reply, it's settled down a bit now, still not right but I've done 300 miles in it without too much of an issue so all I can really do is see how it goes and what prevails. Thanks again
  2. Hi guys, I've just had the fuel injection pump overhauled off my 96 N reg synergie 1.9td due to leaking front seal. It's had the seals done and a check over with parts that needed doing replaced (professionally done) prior to the pump coming off the car would be a pain to start. Stall at junctions, and Just stink of diesel inside engine bay. However since getting it all rebuilt. The car starts and drives well but it's now only idling at approx 600rpm. It's lumpy idling and throughout the low revs. It's misfiring slightly whilst smoking. Not what I would call excessive smoking though. If you put your foot down it doesn't smoke a whisper. I've checked for leaks around the pipes and everything appears dry. It started missing smelling of fuel. Now it's oil. No oil in the water or water in oil. Doesnt seem any more thirsty on the fuel. And its starting easy. All timing marks match up. I suspect it's possibly a dirty or clogged injector. Fuel filter has been replaced. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thanks again.
  3. Hi all my 1.9td synergie has gradually got worse with regards to starting, there is a smell of diesel from the engine bay which is stronger around the fuel pump. And o/s front wheel area. At one stage there used to be a small patch under the car where the fuel would drip. That's now stopped since changing a hose onto the pump. However the intermittent starting issues are still there, usually starts fine from cold, occassionally it still turns over and over. When running it doesn't miss a beat. If you leave it half an hour or so it will crank over and over like it's 're bleeding itself to start. If you prime it with the priming bulb it usually takes 8 to 10 pumps to before it goes firm. Fuel filter is clean and obky about 2k miles old. Made no difference changing it. I'm pretty sure it's leaking from the front/pulley side of the injector pump. All hoses are tight and dry, I removed a 10mm nut that joins the top and bottom timing belt covers and pulled the top half forward slightly and there was diesel dripping out and down the outer casing? I'm pretty certain its a bosch pump fitted. It's a 96 N reg 1.9td. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Usually it also starts better usually if its left facing down hill. I presume that means the fuel is less able to drain back to the tank. Thanks again Terry
  4. Thanks for that unfortunately though the hub might be the same the dash isn't. I've still got the dash from the 51 reg Hdi I scrapped and it's different. The 51 reg is digital mileage where as the 96reg is analogue. And 51 reg has 2 plugs were as mine has 6 or 7 plugs. Just wondered if the wiring could be converted if need be. Thanks again.
  5. Hi thanks for the swift reply. I've adjusted the dash light illumination as far as it will go and unfortunately its still bad.. I'm pretty sure it was myself who damaged the speedo. It's just getting a replacement thats the problem. Thanks for the reply regarding the hub. Much appreciated.
  6. Hi all since having to scrap my 2.0 hdi back in April I've purchased an N reg 1.9td. Unfortunately despite the dealership it came from claiming that the previous owner had spent £1000's on it. And they had over 10 years of history for it nothing was produced. But even so with a bit of TLC this could be a nice car again always wanted the 1.9td again. But anyway it's got a few issues which I'm stuck with so hopefully you guys will come good as you normally do. The first issue is the speedo backing lights are an issue, I removed the cluster to change the bulbs when we purchased it. But unfortunately when i put the cluster back In the indicator lights were not working on the dash. Removed and 're fitted the connections a few times and got the indicators back, but I've obviously damaged the cluster as now the outside temp works but is dull. The temp gauge. Part works but is dark at night. The fuel gauge works but is dull and up to about 90mph on speedo is bright but rest is dark. I've checked the bulbs and all good. The problem is being the old style cluster with about 6/7 plugs that push over a green type circuit board. So far I can't find anyone to rebuild it. They all say they can't get parts. None available on eBay tried the online breaker options and so far no good. So hoping one of you guys might have an idea. Also I need to replace the o/s front wheel bearing. But when I had one done on my hdi last year the garage managed to bend the hub carrier. Since there is nothing about from synergie/806/ulysse would a hub from Citroen dispatch 1.9 or 2.0 his fit? Mine is the non abs version so will a version with abs fit? Apologies for the essay but just trying to get it right at the first attempt. Many thanks for all your help. And hopefully one day i will be able to return the compliment. Thanks Tez
  7. Hi all sorry for the delay in responding to this post but I've been unable to get in to my account just thought I'd follow up my post regarding the possible turbo failure, eventually after weeks of trying to get the car to run I ended up sending the car to the big grave yard in the sky. Regrettably it just would not run. Garage were unable to pin point the source of the problem. And fund's were not available to keep paying out. Strange situation though as for a few days the car ran all be it roughly miss firing. But the exhaust fumes stunk. But strangely it was grey/blue/white smoke that smelt like Lpg fumes. Then it would start run for a few seconds and cut out. Was advised it could be the HP fuel pump. Thanks again for the advice.
  8. ok as a further update to this problem, the following morning at first light I decided to look at the car, I discovered that although originally I thought the oil had been sucked out of the engine, however on checking the dipstick in the light the oil level was still on the maximum mark, the engine started first turn of the key, but would only accelerate to just over 2000 rpm, it would smoke quite badly (black/grey) but then eventually it decided that it was going to get more and more slower, would then only rev to just about 1500rpm, but the smoke was still there although the best way to describe it now is that it didn't smell of fuel or oil but smelt like some kind of gas? kinda reminded me of and lpg vehicle driving past, I thought I would check and replace the diesel filter for argument sake and for the fact that no one can say its the filter that's dirty, but then the real trouble started, the car started and ran but still would only accelerate to approx. 1500rpm, still the same situation with regards to the smell, ive checked the hoses that I can find and all appear to be attached and clear, later that day I tried to start the car and it turned over and over and then finally started I scanned the car with a basic scanner and no faults were stored, obviously its not lexia but all I have available, this morning the car failed to run, it will start and idle for a few seconds at the most and stall, start again and stall around the same time, then if left for a few seconds wont start, when started it does the same again, the filter that I removed was clean as far as I could see, any advice would be much appreciated? anybody with any experience that if it did come to an engine replacement if there are any factors I need to think of, I wont be doing it myself but family mechanic friend will do it, this is the model with the bosch fuel system so has the low pressure fuel pump in the tank, that can be heard running when the ignition is turned on, I have removed the fuel pipes from the fuel filter housing and turned the ignition on and fuel comes out of the pipes, so the low pressure pump is working, there was no evidence of any bits that I could see in the filter housing, bring back the old 1.9td engine simple and straightforward! thanks again
  9. Ok guys since everyone on this site is really good at what they do and advice they offer, I have a big problem I believe. my car a 2001 51 reg citroen synergie 2.0 HDI with approx. 154k on clock, tonight seemed to all of a sudden seem a little sluggish, bearing in mind that the turbo wastegate solenoid has been bypassed for approx. 34k with no problems apart from being that bit sluggish this was a whole new ball game, the car seemed to lack considerable power and seemed to struggle to pick upto 40mph then I noticed that being dark a lot of exhaust smoke coming from the car, I assumed it was me at first and that just was normal running smokes, however the problem soon got a whole lot worse and very quickly, I then noticed that when I got the car back home on any acceleration above 2k rpm it was throwing black smoke out of the exhaust, it then started sounding like there was a possible air/turbo hose off as it sounded a bit like it had an induction kit on it, (sorry best way I can describe it, sounded a bit raunchier I guess, anyways checked everything and couldn't see anything checked the oil and coolant all levels good, no obvious signs of anything traumatic, then it started, the car seemed to run quite warm, engine sounded like it was "pinking" or at least rattling, then the trouble really started, as I was trying to get the car up the hill where we live to our driveway it pretty much gave up, struggled in 1st gear to get above 1500 rpm managed to limp car into driveway, engine running warm now, low speed radiator fan doesn't work so red light flashing, temp well above 95 degrees although not to boiling point, lots of smoke from exhaust, got car on driveway switched it off, checked oil level about 10 mins later and it looks as though there is no oil on the dipstick, bit dark to confirm for definite but when I touched the bottom of the stick it was dry, so whats the verdict guys? am I up the creek without a paddle or what? I'm guessing the obvious starting answer is that the turbo has given up and that's almost certainly where the oil as gone? unless there is a hole somewhere that I haven't yet spotted, also is there a possibility that assuming I can get help to replace the turbo that the engine is knackered from lack of oil? I didn't get any low oil pressure warning light? also is it possible to remove and replace the turbo with the engine in the car? as it was a pain in the arse doing the cat converter, and I assume its possible but how possible? many thanks for any advice. thanks Terry
  10. Hi, i normally use an online car spares for bits unless occasionally local branches are cheaper, so it wasn't a citroen dealer filter, plus our local citroen dealer are a bit hit and miss, it kinda depends on whether it suits them or who is on as to what price you get ir if they can get it stock the parts you want, as for the diesel specialist I was never entirely convinced that it was injectors to be honest, i understand how they get recommended for diesel work but my father almost had a nasty experience with them when his 06 plate Xtype diesel stopped running, they confirmed it was injector related which was correct to some degree but they wanted to replace all fuel pipes, the tank cleaned and possibly fuel pump too, turned out cleaned the tank and replaced injectors and it started and ran. Just needed injectors coding. At the end of the day it's all down to trust with any garage really. And I've seen and heard some horror stories from a few local garages the kind that should be on garages from hell. But thanks again for all your help
  11. Hi everyone, apologies for the delay in getting back to you again, but so far so good regarding this issue, I had resigned myself to the fact that I was going to end up paying to get the injectors replaced, but annoyed that it was such a silly fault, never had any more misfire issues after clearing out the fuel filter, but after checking a couple of times I did notice that the filter was showing signs of damage I assume anyway given that some of fins on it sorry not sure what else to call them) had opened up bigger than the other gaps, so since it only started after changing the fuel filter I decided to change it again, thought the problem was still going to stay around after replacing the filter as it still struggled to start the same day after leaving it for about an hour or so, next day thought stuff it I would fill the tank up since I needed to try and make the most of a bad situation and low and behold since that day 3-4000 miles later its starting first turn of the key, hot or cold, even in minus 5 over xmas, I suppose I have to face reality that the problem could still come back to bite me in the rear but hoping its cleared for the foreseeable future at least, (touch wood) can I just say a huge thank you to "coastline taxis" for his kind offer of matching up some injectors for me, that was really appreciated and at the same time to all other members that have offered advice on the problem, I generally hope that the problem has gone, but we shall see, many thanks again to the members of this site for there help, hope that I can return the advice one day, kind regards Terry
  12. Thanks I appreciate the gesture, and may very well take you up on it in the new year, it is the Bosch fuel system, and the 8 valve, don't they need re-coding to the car though, i was told they do, do they come out easily? Got a mate that does major stuff that I can't do and seemed to think that he could get them out without removing the engine?
  13. Evening all, problems have started again this morning, once car is started its fine, but the problems with starting this morning were silly, it just cranked over and over, kept seeming like it was trying to fire but not start, there is plenty of life in the battery I even hooked up a spare battery to make sure just to give it a boost, the car turns over really well even when cold, I have checked the fuel filter again this morning, and its clean there is no signs of any sediment or other dirt in the housing, just clean diesel, I've drained and refilled the fuel filter, and left for a few hours and the car refused to start again, same as this morning kept seeming like it was trying but not going to start, I'm guessing it stands to reason that there is an injector leaking back? I have searched the fuel lines to the best I can and cant see any splits or loose connections, once running the car runs fine and is smooth, I've never seen a compression test done on a diesel before so, is it done via the glow plug ports? or another way, any advice now would be appreciated, don't mind paying for the injectors to be reconditioned providing they can be got out with out too much trouble, and as long as I am not going to be taken for a mug like some people get done, thanks again
  14. just a further update I will check the housing again this week and see if there is anymore in there, car seems to be pretty good, I have however had another thought which is, I changed the fuel filter at the beginning of October its only been since that was changed that the car has started playing up with starting, but if I recall correctly I did have a problem with the lid of the housing not going back on the base correctly and allowing when I tried to start the car fuel to seep out between the join, when the ignition was turned on so the low pressure pump was obviously forcing fuel out of the housing at this time, I obviously tried to start the car a few times prior to realising that this was happening, I then took the lid off again and refitted the filter and lid and car started but not straight away took a bit of starting, since then its obviously been a bit of a pain on starting, sometimes it does it sometimes it doesn't you cant make a diary out of it so to speak as its never g;teed to happen, but whether or not it should the glow plug light comes on for about 3 seconds most first time starts be it below freezing or above, its done this for a while so I just assume it should do so. is there a chance that there still could be air in the fuel system and if so anyway to bleed it out on these as obviously on the older 1.9td you used to just slacken off the injector pipes until fuel started coming out and tighten them back up, thanks again. again feel free if anyone does have any questions on either the HDI or 1.9td I don't mind trying to help others as I do a lot of repairs myself and have had to get out of a few sticky situations myself.
  15. Hi guys just a quick update, hopefully problem sorted (fingers crossed ) 600 miles nearly since cleaning out fuel filter and housing. Problem seems to have gone now, still can be a little problematic to start from cold when temperatures are below freezing out but always starts in the end, usually runs on 3 cylinders for a few seconds or untill the accelerator is used for a few seconds but that's another problem, i was hoping it might be glow plugs but I'm told these engines don't use them. So we will see how things go.thanks for all the advice
